Hockey RPF? Really? I held out in the face of years of temptation from my f’list. Basically, I blame lynnmonster. Anyway...the inclusion of these stories means that there are now enough Misc RPF stories for Real Person Fiction to be given a separate recs page. How did this happen? *shakes head*
Also, Clint & Phil. Lots of Clint & Phil. Not just Clint & Phil though.
Avengers
(**note: this includes four stories previously recced under Miscellaneous Fandoms in the Iron Man category, which has now been merged with Marvel recs**)
Anonymous: "Kiss and (Don't) Tell" (Avengers/Captain America. Steve/Sam Wilson, Tony, Team. "Steve makes a new friend. Tony just wants the world to make sense." Written in response to an anon-meme prompt, and...if the story of Steve with a new black, political activist boyfriend seems like a bit of a 'teaching moment,' it also feels completely right characterization-wise for everybody. Which is to say that if Tony's a complete snoop and prone to spouting off the sort of glib 'post-racist' comments that are actually, you know...kind of racist, well, it's not entirely out of character? Nicely done...and I wish there was more in this 'verse.)
Atra (atrata on LJ): "People Who Know My Sins" (Iron Man. Tony/Pepper. "Dancing is not in her job description, but neither is mopping up blood at 4 in the morning. She does it anyway." Pepper's reactions are so perfectly drawn, the reader might as well be her.)
Closer: "Some People Just Collect Stamps" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Team. "Phil Coulson wakes up in a hospital bed. Well, damn." Post-movie, and established relationship for Phil and Clint...not that the rest of the team know. Smart and believable and loving, with some wonderfully supportive team dynamics.)
Eb (_eb on LJ): "The Man Makes the Suit" (Iron. Man. Tony/Pepper. "Tony faces a new crisis while dealing with his old demons." Great voices and an engaging plot that works perfectly with the canon-true characterizations.) Currently in a locked post
eleanor_lavish (eleanor_lavish on LJ): "I've got your words in me" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. "Clint doesn’t fuck up assignments very often. This time, he’s pretty glad he did." Pre-movie and so the coming together of the team is very AU'ish by now, but the story’s really charming in a distinctly old-school way.)
ghostrunner (ghostrunner on DW): "I Trust You to Kill Me" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Most people find Specialist Barton so annoying as to be impossible to work with. He's been bounced off so many black ops teams it's probably a record. / Agent Coulson is made of sterner stuff." In which Phil and Clint don't and don't and don't...and then they do. So good.)
hils (hils_k on tumblr): "While Phil Was Sleeping" (Avengers. Steve, possible Phil/Clint background, others. "Steve is present while Phil is unconscious " Post-movie. Gentle and lovely.)
Jaune_Chat (jaune_chat on LJ): the "Being Human" series (Avengers/Iron Man. Jarvis, Tony/Pepper, the Team. “For reasons of his own, Loki gives Tony's AI, Jarvis, a human body. What Tony didn't expect was to find himself trying to teach humanity to someone he'd programmed with his entire life.” Jarvis, as you might expect, is great, but he’s not quite ready to be human. Good and believable interactions between Tony and his former AI - and in the latest story, very good interactions between Jarvis and others. Incomplete as a series, but each individual story provides some kind of closure.)
kathierif_fic (kathierif_fic on LJ): "One hears clearly only with the heart " (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Tony, others. "Clint doesn’t need to hear the words to know what Steve is saying to him. / “What have you done?”" As in comics canon - although in a different way - Clint loses his hearing. His team is still his team.)
laceymcbain (laceymcbain on LJ): "Five Ill-Conceived Valentine's Day Schemes and One Perfectly Romantic Gesture " (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Team, Others. "Phil Coulson hates Valentine's Day at S.H.I.E.L.D. - until he doesn't." This could have been complete crack, but instead it's a cleverly conceived story with some insight and warmth. Okay, and occasional crack. *g*)
lettered (lettered on LJ): "The Kids Weren't Alright" (Avengers, etc. Bruce, Tony, Natasha, Steve, Pepper, others. "Tony accidentally turns himself into a twelve-year-old using alien tech. Steve is stuck as bodyguard, Bruce is stuck trying to fix him, and Pepper is stuck trying to ward off a twelve-year old’s attempts at flirtation. And then things go from bad to worse." Part four of the Responsible Science series, and while there are elements that make much more sense with knowledge of the first three - highly recommended - stories, this could work as a standalone. One of the things that's clear from reading this story is the extent to which the Avengers are damaged people, and how much better they're doing now that they're adults. When they revert to childhood...honestly, it's pretty painful to see. A very insightful story and a very smart one. Potentially spoilery content information: References to past child abuse, homophobia. )
M (see this page. samdonne on LJ): "The Kids Aren't All Right" by Christine Everhart (Iron Man. Gen, with a variety of undercurrents. A wonderfully conceived and executed biographical piece in the style of a Vanity Fair article. Highly recommended!)
noelia_g (noelia_g on LJ): "We've got to find other ways" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. ""The first mission being a cakewalk and a few states away is actually a good thing. At least that’s what Clint thinks until he’s at the designated meet-up point and it’s Coulson behind the wheel."" As the author says: "Post movie, fix-it, road trip." Phil is still recovering, Clint's feeling massive guilt, and the two men are alone together in a car on a mission. Nicely voiced and very believable.)
ObsidianJade (ObsidianJade on ff.net): "Answer" (Avengers. Clint-centric, Phil, Tony, others. "Clint isn't just good at what he does. He's good at what he is." A character study and a relatively dark one, at that. Insightful.)
paperclipbitch (paperclipbitch on LJ / giveyourlovelovegiveitallaway on tumblr): "I've Suffered Shipwrecks" (Avengers, etc. Clint/Loki eventually, plus everybody including Peggy Carter. "Most people, when they break up, sort through their record collections, possibly chuck each other’s clothes onto the sidewalk, engage in soul-destroying coffee dates where they try to sort through the emotional debris, and then leave each other the fuck alone. / Clint and Natasha were never very good at acting like normal people, though, which is why they run a cafe together." A ridiculously entertaining, hipster mash-up, non-superhero AU that Friends could only wish it had been - and weirdly insightful to boot.)
Perpetual Motion (perpet_fic on LJ): "But I Will Hold On Hope (And I Won't Let You Choke) " (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "In which Clint is not the emotionally stunted one, plays pretty well with others, and Sitwell is a foul-mouthed matchmaker against his will." Neither Phil nor Clint conform exactly to typical fanon cliches here, but they feel exactly right as they navigate the waters between wanting and saying something. Plus, there are great OCs and interesting missions and Clint is an actual grown up, which is great to see.)
Sinope (eponis on LJ): the 'Salted Caramels' series (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Team, Others. The series is technically incomplete, but each story stands alone, and each is really well done, especially - as of this rec - "If you do it right, it is sublime" and "Something More" so far. Particularly good pov from Phil, and not only where Clint is concerned.)
Sin_Stained_Ink (sin_stained_ink on LJ/agentsonofcoul on tumblr): "We're Gonna Drown Every Doubt "_ (Avengers. Phil, Team, background Phil/Clint. "He wakes up in hospital with years of his life missing." Post-movie, and Phil is...alive? Interesting povs and not-at-all-unbelievable actions from SHIELD.)
sirona (sirona_fics on DW): "A Matter of Proportions" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. "Clint somehow finds himself fascinated by Phil Coulson's sartorial choices. He refuses to admit that he's kind of maybe been thinking about it a little too much." The story moves seamlessly from observations of clothing to UST to sheer hotness.)
thelma_lou (thelma_lou on LJ): "Reconciliation" (Iron Man. Tony/Pepper. "This is not the end-of-the-line scenario she’d always envisioned. This is not a drunken mistake or desperation or declining years or no one else left to fight." Oh, Pepper's so smart and insightful about Tony, but somehow she still ends up saying yes.)
topaz (topaz119 on LJ): "doesn't matter if I bleed" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Natasha, Team. "Clint's never pretended to be deep. He's just the guy who sits back and watches, the guy who makes the shot when he needs to. He's seen a lot of crap in his time, sat through a lot of fucked-up scenes to get to where he needs to be, but this, now--he can't stand another second of it." Wonderfully written and quite beautiful. The psychological aftershocks from Loki's mind control of Clint and then Phil's 'death' by Loki on the helicarrier are perfectly rendered here. Nothing's easy, but...that's okay. And worth it.)
Vera_dragonmuse (dragonmuse on tumblr): the "Alliterative Domiciles" series (Avengers, etc. Tony/Pepper/Bruce, Natasha/Clint...mostly, Steve, more. The author tags most of the stories in this series as 'fluff,' but...they really aren't. There's a great deal of domesticity and concern and friendship and love, but there's also sorrow and fear and angst, you know, just like real life - or what passes for 'real life' in a superhero universe. A really fantastic series, with everybody wonderfully portrayed. Potentially spoilery content information: Bucky! Which also means the Winter Soldier, brainwashing, attempted murder. But...Bucky! )
webandwhiskers (webandwhiskers on tumblr): the "Proper Care and Feeding of Indefinable Things" series (Avengers/Hulk. Natasha-centric, including Natasha/Bruce, Team, Thor cast. An open-ended - i.e., incomplete - series, which nevertheless feels complete. In part a Natasha character study and in part a Natasha/Bruce romance [especially in the longest story of the series so far: "Neither Wild nor Tame" which focuses entirely on the development of their relationship]. Engaging and insightful, with some smart things to say about the fine line between the human and the monstrous. Good look at friendship too, especially female friendship.)
RPF - Misc (Hockey)
impertinence (impertinence on LJ): "Ballad of a Broken Bromance" (Hockey RPF. Jeff Carter/Mike Richards. "Jeff's used to playing with Richie; they've done it since they were 17. He signs a contract with Philly thinking he'll win a Cup there, with Richie. Then they're traded away from each other - and it turns out, that's just the beginning. The sweep, the trade, the SECOND trade, and what happens after." Drinking and fucking girls they picked up in bars and not talking about their feelings for each other and really? These are just the kind of guys I probably wouldn't want to spend any time with in real life. But in this story, god, these boys - these totally uncommunicative douches - are kind of perfect. Yeah, I got a little weepy on occasion. Note: this is, um...based on a true story)
shihadchick (shihadchick on LJ/DW): "Play Along" (Hockey RPF. Duncan Keith/Brent Seabrook. ""I bet you a hundred bucks," Sharpy says, gesturing with his drink to punctuate how very serious he is about this suggestion, "that I can pick up the next person who walks in that door before you can." / Duncan Keith probably shouldn't have taken that bet." A classic 'first time' slash story, featuring the old school 'pretending to be dating' trope, but still manages to feel fresh...and very sweet.)
thehoyden (thehoyden on LJ): "Tour de Force" (Hockey RPF. Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews, various other Blackhawks. "“Write what you know” was good enough advice for Jo March, so it’s good enough for Patrick Kane." A hockey player as a 'secret genius' of a novelist may seem unlikely (*g*), but the way he and his team-mates feel about the game rings entirely true. Sweet and charming and altogether happy-making. You know, the usual sorts of adjectives used to discuss hockey. *g*)
Sherlock Holmes
achray (achray on LJ): "Answer the Time of Request" (BBC. Sherlock/John, John/uncounted others - male and female. "“I can tell you this: your brother is definitely not a virgin. Seriously, I don’t know where you got that idea from.” / “You have some evidence to the contrary?,” said Mycroft, raising one eyebrow. He looked pleasantly disbelieving. / John raised an eyebrow back. “Do you really need me to spell it out?,” he said." Sherlock's not precisely a virgin, John's very much not a virgin, and Sherlock and John aren't in a relationship...perhaps.)
greywash (greywash on LJ/DW): "Pornography" (Sherlock/John. "Sherlock has a case. John has a cold. Mycroft's done paying the rent, Mrs. Hudson is still not their housekeeper, and there's a box of one-eyed monsters under the bed. Not quite just another Wednesday in 221B, but nearly." Let me state for the record that the title is not a red herring *g* Sexy and sweet.)
professorfangirl (lizeckhart on LJ): "Playground" (BBC. Sherlock/John. ""Sherlock’s surprisingly strong, for all he’s so willowy. But John has a lower center of gravity, so the tussle hovers halfway to the bedroom door. John shakes his head, laughing. 'Dammit, Sherlock. Grow up.' (But he really doesn’t mean it. He doesn’t mean it at all.)"" An actual laugh-out-loud beginning, and then an abrupt switch of mood, which was just shy of too 'poetic' and instead worked wonderfully to convey the way sex and love and the whole damned thing feels sometimes.)
what_alchemy (what_alchemy on LJ): "An Affinity for Lignin " (BBC. Sherlock/John. "I can do it, John. What Mr. Norbury did. Only better, I think." Clever and domestic and loving. A coda, of sorts, to the Embers series - previously recced on the main Sherlock page, and...do I need a warning for babyfic? Perhaps in this particular series I do.)
what_alchemy (what_alchemy on LJ): "Thirty-Two Years " (BBC. Mycroft/OFC. "When Mycroft Holmes lost his virginity at age sixteen to the groundskeeper’s rough-hewn daughter while home from Eton for the summer, it came as rather a surprise. / Thirty-two years in an unconventional romance." Raw and real and dirty - in all the best ways - with a side of class issues. Another coda to the Embers series [see above], but Mycroft-centric.)
Also, Clint & Phil. Lots of Clint & Phil. Not just Clint & Phil though.
