bethbethbeth: (Avengers Thor Tony Cap (equanimousicons))
[personal profile] bethbethbeth posting in [community profile] beth_h
I tried to adopt a new method of keeping track of potential recs between updates, and all I accomplished was losing my info, having to scramble to remember what I'd read, and ending up with an almost total failure to leave comments on author's stories (*apologies Authors!). Back to the drawing board...

Avengers - Marvel

Amanuensis (amanuensis on LJ): " Corruption and Crème Brûleé" ( Avengers. Loki/Clint Barton. " Loki finds that Agent Barton is peerless. In all things. For a mortal. Which is unforgivable." During the movie, so let's just say this is not a happily-ever-after story. Potentially spoilery content information: extremely dubious consent. Not at all my usual thing, but excellently done.)

astolat (astolat on LJ): "Hug Therapy" ( Avengers/Thor. Thor/Loki. " "I am hugging you," Thor explained. "That you may know I love you, despite your madness."" Slightly preposterous set-up and yet pretty great nonetheless, with a perfect Thor p.o.v. )

belmanoir (belmanoir on LJ): the "Flying From the Blast" series ( Avengers/Thor/Iron Man. Loki&Thor, Loki/Tony. " Thor and Loki go on the run together post-Avengers, road-trip across Australia, and get family therapy." Starting with Thor's rescue of Loki from Odin's version of [Norse myth canon] justice, the series deals with family therapy [which shouldn't make sense, but does], a road trip, and the development of a relationship between former enemies. Five stories at the time of this writing. Very engaging and frequently touching. Potentially spoilery content information: Consensual humiliation and pain in the fourth part of the series, Tony-centric alcohol abuse throughout, and Jotun-inspired self hatred on Loki's part.)

brilligspoons (brilligspoons on LJ): "Checkboxes" (Avengers. Clint/Phil/Natasha. " Phil quickly loses control of a situation he wasn't really sure he wanted to be in to begin with." Written for a prompt asking for an Asexual!Phil. Pepper sends a link for a specific kind of online dating site to Phil. Short...and sweet. )

Closer: "Come at Me" (Avengers/Iron Man. Steve/Tony/Pepper...eventually. " Steve gets a lesson in pop psychology, drives a roadster, fends off an aspiring killer robot, conquers Tetris, wins a quarter, buys pants, battles the undead, and falls hard for Tony Stark and Pepper Potts. / Just your average superhero stuff.") As the author summary says! Really, I couldn't love Steve any more than I did in this story. Or Tony. Or Pepper. Potentially spoilery content information: If returns from the dead bother you, well...you probably wouldn't be reading about Steve, but Phil comes back too - and yes, he was dead before returning.)

coffeebuddha (coffeebuddha on LJ/DW): "Things That Shine" (Avengers/Thor. Bruce/Darcy, Tony, Natasha, others. " Darcy was seven the first time she fell in love. / The second time it happens, she's twenty-five, hung over as all get out, and has a real chance of getting shot, which is actually more alarming than the giant green guy who's holding her hostage." The longest section of the Manic Monday series, "Things That Shine" follows the unlikely, but adorable developing relationship between Darcy Lewis and Bruce Banner. Sweet and often laugh-out-loud funny.)

cognomen (cog_nomen on LJ): "How Many Scientists Does it Take to Screw in the Stark Tower?" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Tony/Bruce. "Honestly, Bruce hadn't gone into this looking to form any lasting attachments - if he was honest with himself, he knew better." Post-movie relationship development as negotiations, of a sort, take place between Tony and Bruce - and Bruce and The Other Guy. Note: Pepper - who's great - is absolutely still part of the equation.)

enigma_eggroll: "A Space Between" (Avengers/Thor. Steve/Darcy. "A man out of time and a woman out of place, they find their way forward in an uncertain world." Post-movie. Gentle and romantic.)

hoosierbitch (hoosierbitch on LJ/DW): "assume a defensive stance" (Avengers/Hulk. Bruce/Clint, others. " No one can understand why Bruce and Clint are together. Clint's loud, brash, irritating--exactly what Bruce doesn't need in his life. (Also, there are sandwiches. Of LOVE.)" The whole story feels poised on the perfect tipping point between sweet&funny and heartachingly poignant. A completely unexpected pairing for me, but I liked it very much.)

ignipes (ignipes on LJ): "To Be Modified As Necessary" (James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers, Jane Foster/Thor, Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov, James "Bucky" Barnes/Natasha Romanov " They only need ten rules to ensure (relatively) peaceful cohabitation." A series of negotiations that make these people come together like a family. Sometimes funny and sometimes painful - in the best possible way - and always engaging.)

irnan (irnan on LJ): "and turning stay" (Avengers/Iron man. Pepper/Tony, Others. " "Tony - you're all I've got too, you know."" Despite the author summary, this is really wonderfully Pepper-centric. Tony, yes, but Pepper's life is about even more than just Tony, lovely though he is. Really smart and engaging.)

irnan (irnan on LJ): "spectrum" (Avengers/Iron Man/Captain America. Tony/Pepper, the Team, Various. " Tony sets out to learn to play with others. Pepper enables him. The Avengers spend a lot of time pretending they’re not grateful for the chance to play back." Really lovely, almost as if somebody decided to do a whole cable tv season of post-movie Avengers, scripted entirely to my fantasy-specifications for how everybody should come together, followed by an end-of-season Bucky-centric three-ep arc. )

kellifer_fic: ”Brand New Day” (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Natasha, Darcy, Tony, others. “Today is one thousand, six hundred and forty. Just get through it.” Phil and Clint are involved, then Clint disappears...for five years. He eventually resurfaces, but he’s not the same. 8,900 words, and about 8,000 of them are pretty heartbreaking, but well worth the heartbreak.)

lettered (lettered on LJ): the 'Responsible Science' series ( Avengers/Hulk. Two really excellent stories so far, both with a bit of subtext, but mostly gen. The first is Bruce&Natasha: "Uninterested in being an Avenger, Bruce goes back into hiding. Once more Natasha is sent to recruit him, but she has an agenda of her own. They navigate being human. At least one of them sometimes fails." and the second is Bruce&Steve: "Steve goes to Uganda, ostensibly to fetch Bruce, who still doesn’t want to join the Avengers. Steve tries to figure out how to do the right thing; they both try to find their place in the world." Very smart and insightful...with more to come.)

makokitten (makokitten on LJ/tumblr): "Misdeamors" (Avengers/Thor/Iron Man. Tony/Pepper, Loki/Tony, Tony/Pepper/Loki. " Tony and Pepper's night in is disrupted by an unexpected guest--well, prisoner--but they manage to make the most of it." Sexy and entertaining.)

noelia_g (noelia_g on LJ): "If at first you don't succeed (it could be a conspiracy)" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. ""Coulson gets released from medical on Monday, and on Wednesday Clint is ready to fucking murder his new teammates." In which Clint wants a quiet moment to confess his feelings and Avengers are fucking cockblockers." Funny, sweet, and Clint has a great inner voice.)

Perpetual Motion (perpet_fic on LJ): "By the Book" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Coulson figures it out through standard procedure (rumor mill to threatening junior agents to that required weird conversation with one’s boss)." Phil is honest and great...and, as a side note, he has an excellent relationship with Nick Fury.)

sinope (eponis on LJ): "Conviction" (Avengers. Phil/Clint...mostly...eventually. " Coulson gets reborn as a kid named PJ, Hawkeye's biggest fan. Now all he has to do is convince Clint to give him a shot. History repeats itself, but it takes time." Creative and clever and very moving.)

snack_size (snack_size on LJ): "Another Reason to Keep You" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Tony/Bruce. " “I know that he - the Other Guy, he helped us. He saved me. You saved the world.” Bruce tossed some toast and eggs onto a plate and handed them to Tony, then put some on his own. “You should take the rest of the eggs, too,” Tony said. “It looks like it’s been weeks since you’ve eaten.” / “I ate yesterday.” / “Before then,” Tony said, and Bruce poured himself more tea before sitting down, ignoring the eggs. “You need...better. Deserve it.” He said this while he scooped scrambled eggs into his mouth, and Bruce had to think that it was on purpose. /“You make it a habit of picking up strays?” Bruce asked, leaning back to sip his tea and grimacing." Tony does a brilliant job of getting Bruce to hide in plain sight.)

thebratqueen (thebratqueen on LJ): "Progress Underlaid by Shared Hopes" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Tony/Bruce, others. " On the one hand: irritated Hulk. But on the other if you were a being made up of rage maybe irritated was you having a good day." Part three of the Feelings Under Seriously Intense Observation and Negotiation" series. Tony has a talk with the Hulk, and Bruce isn't pleased. Good Hulk and Bruce voices in particular. Potentially spoilery content information: If you're a Pepper/Tony person, you should know that she's pushed aside a bit, but she and Tony are okay with it - and still friends - so the semi-obsessed shipper reader should be too? [I always want there to be a continuing Tony/Pepper relationship in fic, no matter who else gets added to the pairing, but that's my issue *g*])

thingswithwings (thingswithwings on LJ): "Five Ways to Get In Touch with Your Inner Mild-Mannered Scientist" (Avengers/Hulk. Bruce/everyone friendship, everyone/everyone sexy times. "sleep, smash, sparring, science, sex." Four entirely believable - and charming - Bruce/Hulk-centric friendship sections and then one entirely unbelievable - but no less hot for all that - team bed romp.)

vain_glorious (on LJ): ”Another Bizarre and Thankless Situation” (Gen. Tony, Loki, Natasha, Team. “"Hostages 101: If you kill them first, no one is going to do what you say."” In which Tony’s a clever hostage and Loki doesn’t quite get nuances. Good, good teamwork.)

vain_glorious (vain_glorious on LJ): " In Great Transition" (Avengers. Tony, The Team. " One by one, the Avengers move into Stark Tower." Great dialogue and lovely team building, for certain Avengers values of 'lovely.' *g*)

Lewis

dracofiend (dracofiend on LJ): "Quick as You Like" ( Lewis/Hathaway. " Lewis is on crutches; James is on the job. Slowly, slowly, Lewis recognizes love." One of those wonderful stories where domesticity just sort of happens while the participants are busy doing other things)

Lindenharp (lindenharp on LJ): "The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian" (Lewis/Hathaway. " Coffee and conversation. James seems to have something weighing on his mind. Is it the case? Or something else?" Post-"Fearful Symmetry." Very good voices. Robbie is wonderful at reading James.)

Sherlock Holmes

holyfant (holyfant on LJ): "The Fabric of Life" ( BBC. John/Sherlock. " The fabric of life rearranges itself around the re-emergence of Sherlock." Emotionally honest and very well written, with a pretty great cast of believable OC's. And long! Potentially spoilery content information: 'on-screen' violence, discussions about death and grief with John’s “survivors group”, suicidal ideation)

maybeamanda and onemillionenine (maybe_amanda on LJ): "Sustain III: Obbligato" ( BBC. Sherlock/Molly, John/Mary, Mycroft, others. AU from the end of The Great Game, and seriously, you probably should have read Sustain I and Sustain II before this for context, even though III is complete unto itself. This story, part kidfic and part case fic, has some really fascinating ideas about the Holmes family dynamics, even if some of them - especially the sections including the parents - aren't particularly supported by canon, although they don't contradict canon either. Potentially spoilery content information: on-screen violence and threats to children. And if you haven't read the first two stories, you need to know that Molly's child, Edmund, is also Sherlock's.) )

solojones ( on LJ): "The Sign of the Four" (BBC. Sherlock&John, John/Mary, Mycroft, others " A year and a half post-Reichenbach, a damaged Sherlock Holmes returns to Baker Street. But everything's changed, leaving the friendship between Sherlock and John tense and uncertain. While struggling to adjust, Sherlock, John, and Mary Morstan find themselves on a case involving betrayal, deception, and tests of friendship. But will it make their bonds stronger or tear them apart? And will it matter if Sherlock's demons pull him under first?" 'Damaged' is the right word for this Sherlock, and yet he reads utterly true to what somebody who'd had his experiences might have become. "The Sign of the Four" is essentially Gen - with John and Mary's romantic relationship as one added element, but the focus of the story is the (re)development of Sherlock and John's relationship and that's handled perfectly. Potentially spoilery content information: Cocaine use, and not just casually referenced.) )

White Collar

jmtorres (jmtorres on LJ/DW): "You Ruined Everything (In the Nicest Way)" (Peter, Neal, Elizabeth. "A story of missed connections, in which Peter doesn't know what to say, Neal doesn't seem to want to hear it, and Elizabethan translation proves vital." Great interactions, and if Neal seems slightly younger than he seems to be on the show, well...that actually makes perfect sense in context. Potentially spoilery content information: Peter is Neal's father. Seriously. And done extremely well.)

As I've noted before, I will clearly never catch up with old stories. If you have a favorite story (your own or somebody else's) that you think I might have missed and it's in a fandom that I've recced before (see my main recs page, and especially including one of the following fandoms: Avengers, Discworld, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Lewis, Sherlock Holmes in all varieties, or White Collar), feel free to leave a link below

You are my hero for making all these Avengers recs. I have barely any time to read at the moment, but what I've been reading has mostly been from you and I've loved it. Thanks!

kariye (when I switched usernames, I never bothered to get a DW since I never use it - but it's annoying to be anon. hum.)
