This update includes the previously-noted yuletide recs, but doesn't include almost any holiday exchange fic (most of which I still haven't had a chance to read).
Arthurian Legend
lanyon: "Knight's Move" (Arthur, Lancelot, Galahad, Mordred, Others. Future-Fic. "Arthur Pendragon, Once and Future King, is replenished and renewed following his 'sojourn' on Avalon. Thousands of years have passed and his knights are re-gathering, reincarnated and re-learning their roles. As the last member of the British Royal Family lies dying and Arthur prepares for his takeover, it is all observed by another whose fate was entangled with these men." A perfect blend of the modern world and the long ago.)
Classical Mythology
baffledking: "A Spring With No Winter" (Persephone/Hades. "A maiden is born, in time becomes a mother- to bear her own maiden daughter- and, in her age, is the crone, withered, but wise. The spring comes, in time bears fruit and seeds, before, as the year ends, the earth becomes withered and bare." Persephone is allowed to choose...)
Discworld
Fabrisse: "Of Empires and Education" (Gen. Vetinari, Vimes. "The future of Ankh-Morpork is discussed." Just a simple conversation between two men, but one which I think I'd really like to happen somewhere in the 'real' Ankh-Morpork.)
Doctor Who
hollimichele (holli on LJ/DW): "Go and Catch a Falling Star" (Crossover with Lord Peter Wimsey - Dorothy Sayers. Doctor, 'The Ponds', Peter Wimsey, Harriet Vane Wimsey, Others. ""No," Harriet Vane said, having given it some thought. "I don't suppose I do believe in spontaneous human combustion."" A perfect blend of the two canons...and how much do I wish, now, that Peter and Harriet could be the Doctor's companions, at least for a little while.)
Galaxy Quest
peet4paint: "The Alien Lover" (Laliari. "The first time Laliari sees the humans she falls in love." I adore Laliari in this story; she's given a wonderful backstory and she's both very alien and at the same time, very...human.)
Harry Potter
Delphi (atdelphi on LJ): "Father to the Man" (Snape/Filch. "A restricted spell goes awry, and Severus Snape is left scrambling to cover his tracks. Meanwhile, Argus Filch turns out to be surprisingly good with small children, the nature of time is proven to be fiddly and anyone's guess, and (at least one) Severus gets a second chance at life." Childrearing, domesticity, hurt/comfort, and slash - with a gen sensibility. And so well written.)
igrockspock (on LJ): "The Journey of a Thousand Miles" (Snape and Luna gen, post canon. "After the end of the war, Luna makes two surprising discoveries: her father attempted to give Harry to Lord Voldemort, and Severus Snape is alive." An excellent look at betrayal and forgiveness.)
Lyras (lyras on LJ/IJ/DW): "Into the Silence" (Severus Snape, with appearances by Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Lily Evans, Narcissa Malfoy and assorted others. "Severus's year as headmaster of Hogwarts presents many challenges. Acceptance is the greatest of them all." Strong, touching, and bittersweet.)
Kribu (kribu on LJ): "Turn To Dark" (Snape/Hermione. "Some days, waking up is different." Ordinarily, the sensibilities of Science Fiction and Fantasy - the category to which HP obviously belongs - are so very different as make a fusion of the two genres almost impossible, but this story pulls the HP world firmly into an SF setting and makes it work My only real 'complaint' is that it feels as if far more of this story could be told, but to the author's credit, the tale ends in a good place...if too soon.)
Lariope (lariopefic on LJ): "Advanced Contemporary Potion Making" (Snape/Hermione, Ron/Hermione. "Twenty-one years after the war, Hermione Weasley sends her second child off to Hogwarts. Her husband suggests she take a class in her new-found spare time. That class might change her life forever." Let me get the warning out of the way right now: this is, as you might have guessed - given the Snape/Hermione pairing - a story with infidelity at its heart, but its done in a very real, very believable way. There are no 'bad guys' here - and no easy choices.)
Machshefa (machshefa on LJ): "The Essence of Sunset" (Snape/Hermione. "My chambers are dark, lit only by the glow of the midnight moon. The castle creaks with rawness of stone and antiquity of magic, filled with the power welling up from beneath the mountain and the fire of intention fuelled by our four vibrant streams of magic, combined. It is nearly impossible to recognise this expanse of land from just six months ago: pristine grasses as far as the eye could see, cresting on a tidal wave of green, the shadow of grey stone a skeleton underneath. A spider's web holding together an enterprise that, tonight, feels like folly. I had expected to feel exultant." A really fantastic take on a 'parallel universes' prompt from the sshg_exchange. An unexpected, yet immediately recognizable version of Hermione and a Snape who's only just learning that not everything has to be the way it's always been. Plus, a wonderful look back into the time of the Founders.)
Melisande (melisande88 on LJ): "Preparation is the Key" (Snape/Hermione. "Snape requires a large sum of money, and a loan from Gringotts is the very last thing he wants, but there's nowhere else to turn. When the goblins assign Arithmancer Granger to monitor their investment full-time, sparks fly. Hermione uncovers much more than potions work at Spinner's End. There are troublesome buttons and an even more troublesome journal. The only one who seems to know what's going on is the cat, and she's not telling." Excellent pacing and a wonderfully surly Snape.)
plaid_slytherin (plaid_slytherin on LJ): "An Old Fool's Folly" (Slughorn/Dumbledore. "When he returns to teaching, Horace tries to feel out whether or not Albus is interested in resurrecting their former relationship." Entirely non-graphic, yet no less 'adult' for all that. A really intelligent look at fears and guilt and regrets...and hope.)
Resonant (resonant on LJ/DW): "Appetite" (Crossover with Ratatouille. Snape [sort of]/Horst. "Snape's happy ending requires him to start again in another story." The perfect story for anyone who took one look at Anton Ego in Ratatouille and said "It's Snape!")
Here Come the Brides
Diana Williams (dkwilliams on LJ): "A New Beginning" (Jason Bolt/Aaron Stempel. "A sudden illness and advice from a friend makes Jason Bolt rethink his friendship with sawmill owner, Aaron Stempel." After only a hundred years of requesting this pairing for yuletide...success! Pre-slash, and excellently voiced.)
Lewis (aka, Inspector Lewis)
garryowen (garryowen on LJ): "The Hermit Crab" (Hathaway/Lewis. "Lewis and Hathaway go on holiday to Cornwall, and Lewis must get used to one hotel room, public kisses, and Hathaway’s ideas about changing the world" An excellent sense of place...and an honest, believable portrayal of the early'ish stages of a realistic relationship from Lewis's pov, with self-consciousness and freedom - sexual and otherwise - warring for supremacy.)
Lamardeuse (lamardeuse on LJ/DW): "Old Dog, New Tricks" (Hathaway/Lewis. "You can teach an old dog after all." An established relationship story, but a relationship that hasn't been established very long. Extremely sweet, without being in any way cloying. Includes some very great OFCs.)
Luthien (luthien on LJ): "Falling" (Lewis, Hathaway - pre-slash, with a sequel in progress. "Lewis doesn't care for Christmastime any more." Perfectly true to the series...with including the sub-text.)
Luthien (luthien on LJ): "Telling Time" (Hathaway/Lewis. "Secrets from Hathaway's past and present combine to create complications in an important case." Slightly slow at the very start, but the voices - and the silences - are very good, and both the [related] case and relationship plots are extremely believable.)
Lord Peter Wimsey - Dorothy Sayers
hollimichele (holli on LJ/DW): "Go and Catch a Falling Star" (Crossover with Doctor Who.
AlexElizabeth: "Role Model" (Saint George, Peter, Bredon, Others. "Viscount Saint-George never meant to make a role model out of his uncle, but somehow Peter wormed himself into Saint-George's conscience." Saint-George bonds first with his uncle and then with Peter's son...and in the process, becomes a man. Really lovely story.)
Nobuta Wo Produce
gleefilled: "Lost and Found" (Akira & Nobuta, Nobuta/Shittaki, Shuuji. "Everyone else has changed except for Akira." Post-canon and perfectly voiced!)
Peter Pan
the_alchemist: "Ever So Much More Than Twenty" (Wendy/Hook. "1920s London. A successful children's author is invited discuss a mysterious commission, and finds herself reunited with a figure from her earliest sexual fantasies." A pwp with a plot, despite that being a complete contradiction in terms. *g*)
hollimichele (holli on LJ/DW): "The Necessary Things" (Wendy-centric. "Wendy grows up." Smart and...a little sad maybe, especially if you're of the opinion that Neverland should follow Wendy wherever she goes. But utterly believable for all that.)
LostWendy1: "The Art of Becoming" (George Darling, Others. "“Every child is affected thus the first time he is treated unfairly. All he thinks he has a right to when he comes to you to be yours is fairness. After you have been unfair to him he will love you again, but will never afterwards be the same boy. No one ever gets over the first unfairness; no one except Peter. He often met it, but he always forgot it. I suppose that was the real difference between him and all the rest.” (Peter Pan, Barrie)" There's a Neverland in every child's life, even George Darling's.)
Dollfayce: "Only the Heartless" (Wendy/Hook. "There is only one way to fly." Hook has died, of course, but it isn't the first time he's died. He'd like it to be the last, however, but first, he needs his storyteller. Some minor proofreading issues, but engaging and cleverly written.)
Kittie Darkhart: "His Favourite Tradition" (Wendy/Hook. "Christmas 1926. It is that magical time of year again, and a now, grown-up Wendy celebrates the holiday with a family of her own—even when her beloved husband questions a few of the family's Christmas traditions, though there is one that is his favourite." Basically, post-canon domestic schmoop, but rather sweet.)
Phantom of the Opera
Antiquarianne: "A Stroll on Sunday" (Erik/OFC. "A snap decision to take a walk on Sunday has unforeseeable consequences for Erik. Leroux-based" A very interesting and modern original character, despite the story being set in the book canon era.)
Aquandrian: "Angel, there's no sense" (POTO. Christine/Raoul, Christine/Erik. Post-canon. NC-17. "Her body is not her own. He will put his hands on her, into her, and draw out her secrets. She will earn the sin." Not my usual thing, since in many ways, it's almost entirely a pwp, but despite that, I really liked this. Very interesting and such a departure from the kind of story that's typically found in this fandom.)
Broken Vow: "The Rising Sun" (Christine/Raoul, Erik/Christine. "Erik's time in Persia takes an unexpected turn when the woman he is destined to love enters at the darkest period of his life." An odd, albeit interesting fusion of Leroux and Kay, narrated from multiple character p.o.v.'s, with Christine and Raoul married as the story begins - and Erik settled as an architect - and sometime torturer - in Persia. Warning for the death of Raoul, in a somewhat contrived - and yet, at the same time, a totally believable way . )
Kadorienne (mosellegreen on LJ/DW/IJ): "All I Ask of You" (Erik/...Others. "The Phantom lives... and loves." Wonderfully meta, with a lovely - if bittersweet - fairy tale quality.)
Ratatouille
Resonant (resonant on LJ/DW): "Appetite" (Crossover with Harry Potter. Snape [sort of]/Horst. "Snape's happy ending requires him to start again in another story." The perfect story for anyone who took one look at Anton Ego in Ratatouille and said "It's Snape!")
RPF - Historical
Aquila (puella_nerdii on LJ/DW): "Still Climbing After Knowledge Infinite" (Shakespeare/Marlowe, others. "How much of the play is the playwright? In which Will Shakespeare meets Kit Marlowe, and in searching for Kit's voice, begins to discover his own." A smart and engaging tale, set against a perfectly believable early modern political backdrop. Meanwhile, I'd probably be just as attracted to this Kit as much as Shakespeare was. *g*)
emilyenrose: "Descent" (Emperor Augustus/Marcus Tullius Cicero the Younger. "The greatest treat of all was sitting on his father’s lap to add his signature to the bottom of a letter to Atticus while his father corrected his spelling: kappa iota kappa epsilon, the pen slipping in his chubby hand, rho omicron nu. Cicero the younger sends his greetings to Titus the Athenian." As the archive tag says: 'daddy issues.' Insightful and well worth reading even if you aren't a particular fan of the Cicero family)
Shakespeare
Amilyn: "Hear the Lady Sing in Welsh" (Henry IV, Part One. Kate/Hotspur. "Hotspur and Kate Percy's playful relationship is born of the ways they complement one another, and their respect for that. It does not, however, protect Kate after Hotspur's death." A lovely - though sad - tale.)
Sherlock Holmes
brbsoulnomming" "Parallel" (Sherlock/John. "Written for a prompt over on sherlockbbc_fic: There's a case at a secondary school/University, some series of threats or string of bizarre murders that has the entire campus shaken. In the course of the investigation, Sherlock and John meet two students. One is well liked if not popular, athletic, intelligent without showing off, involved only because they were close to a victim or witnessed something important. The other is a loner with no regard for social norms, an insufferable genius, always in the chem lab, and involved because everyone, including teachers/professors, think they're behind everything. Sherlock and John are responsible for these two meeting. And, because they both want to help with the investigation, they get to watch them become friends and fall a little in love. And that makes them feel things about themselves that they've been working very hard to not feel, thank you." Really smart and engaging. A great deal of emphasis on the OCs' story, but somehow that works to illuminate the story of Sherlock and John as well.)
Ivyblossom: "The Progress of Sherlock Holmes" (Sherlock/John; John/Mary. "Sherlock is head over heels for John, but you wouldn't know it by looking at him. First-person present-tense series of short scenes from Sherlock's point of view, borrowing heavily from Arthur Conan Doyle's stories." It took me four starts to read past the first few paragraphs for some odd reason and I considered abandoning the story, but once I fell into a rhythm, I couldn't put it down. Literally. Really excellent view of Sherlock's thought processes - and a well-paced development of the Sherlock/John relationship. Warning for infidelity, if that's a concern of yours when reading fiction.)
Machshefa (machshefa1 on LJ): "Touchstone" (Sherlock BBC. Sherlock/John. "On John Watson’s sixth birthday, his mum gave him a flat wooden box to hold his wish stones" A lyrical and beautifully imaginative (in all the right ways) look at how separation and connection intertwine, and how love - quite literally, at times - is written on the body. Canon, through a prism of magic realism.)
Scoffy (sc010f on LJ): "All that You Build, All that You Break" (Mycroft/Lestrade; John/Sherlock [background]. "(Written for a prompt on the sherlockbbc_fic community). Mycroft Holmes and Greg Lestrade knew each other as children. Twenty years later, they encounter one another and everything is different." Some really interesting observations about family dynamics, class structure, and the nature of ambition.)
what_alchemy (what_alchemy on LJ/DW): "The Syntax of Things" (Sherlock/John, Mycroft, 'Mummy.' "When John looked at him, Sherlock felt whole, felt like he was who he was meant to be. Not a freak, an oddity, or a monster in-between." An emotionally true - sometimes heart-wrenching and sometimes soul-satisfying - story. Includes issues surrounding transphobia.)
The Vorkosigan Saga
Dira Sudis: "Frequently Suggested Sexual Practices: An Aid to Communication" (Aral/Cordelia. As the author notes say: "...this is a story about all the sex Aral and Cordelia didn't have with each other before they got married" Really wonderful, and it reads very much like Bujold. Aral and Cordelia are so great together canonically that it's sometimes difficult to remember just how alien they are initially to each other; this story serves as a good reminder of that fact, while still showing just how right the connection between the two of them is.)
cest_what: "A Fine and Public Place" (Ivan Vorpatril/Byerly Vorrutyer. "High Vor gossip is both a volatile threat and a tool to be used." Reading this story just made me into a fan of this pairing.)
An unexpected, yet immediately recognizable version of Hermione and a Snape who's only just learning that not everything has to be the way it's always been. Plus, a wonderful look back into the time of the Founders.)
