bethbethbeth: Avengers A Logo (Avengers)

Please note that while my current rec policy is to try and include story warnings, I make no guarantees. These being comic book superhero universes, though, there's clearly going to be at least some darkness and violence, so ...caveat lector.

absolutelywrite "words like arrows (keep missing the target)" (Avengers. Phil/Clint "Phil Coulson dies saving the world; Clint Barton would rip the world apart to get him back." Could possible have benefited from another "act," but creative and very moving.)

abstractconcept (the_con_cept on LJ): "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Wanks" (Avengers/Captain America. Steve/Phil, Tony, Team. "Eventually Steve comes around to the idea that a dirty picture might be just another way to say ‘I love you.’" Once Steve understands that Phil Coulson likes him - i.e., likes likes him - he starts to consider what he thinks about Phil. A pairing that's surprisingly rare given their movie interactions, and which works really well here. Sweet, funny, kind of charming. And Tony is sort of perfect too.)

abstractconcept: "Small Town Hero" (Avengers. Phil/Steve. "Steve and Phil are your average small town dads—except, of course, that one of them is the celebrated Captain America and the other is an unsung national hero. Steve would like Phil to get the recognition he deserves . . . and he wouldn't mind if Phil was around to take out the trash more often." A...domestic story, set in the canon-compliant future in small town America. Some hints of neighborhood homophobia, but mostly gentle with believable characterizations.)

AdamantSteve: "This Is Not My Beautiful House" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Team. "Clint wakes up after a mission he can't remember with the boyfriend he never thought he'd have." A story about what seems to be missing memories that isn't about amnesia or memory wiping. Creative, original, and a good look at what it means to be an individual.)

adventurepants "These Are Better Days" (Avengers. Steve, Pepper/Tony, Team. " Steve's tried to watch the news, some—he has a lot to catch up on, after all—but sometimes even that's not real. “The Daily Show is funny because it's fake,” Bruce had tried to explain to him. “Fox News is funny because it doesn't know that it's fake.” / They try to be patient with him. He figures, with Thor back in Asgard, he's the closest thing to an alien they've got. But he's stopped watching the news, anyway. It gets old, after a while, when you just keep seeing your own face." Touching...and particularly good Steve & Thor interactions)

AlchemyAlice (alchemyalice on LJ): "When they finally come to destroy the earth (they'll have to go through you first) " (Avengers/Batman. Bruce Wayne & Tony Stark, with some background Steve/Tony. others. "In which Tony Stark went to boarding school with Bruce Wayne, and the road to becoming a superhero is not smooth." As the author's notes suggest, this is a sort of hodge-podge of various comics/movie canons to put Bruce and Tony's lives in synch. But once that happens, this story shows how perfectly these two men actually complement each other)

Alis Dee (dee at DW): the "Agent Loki: International Man of Mayhem" series (Avengers/Thor/etc. Loki-centric, plus everybody. “Post-Avengers "What If...?" based on the question: What if, instead of sending the defeated Loki back to Asgard, S.H.I.E.L.D. had kept him instead?" The series begins with the section titled "Epilogue", and here’s the thing: based on the title, I was absolutely certain this was going to be crack, but it’s not at all. It’s Loki’s pov, so characters like Thor come off as slightly more buffoonish than they do in canon, at least initially, but this is no apologia for Loki. Action and psychology and Viking chess and some actual friendships: what more could you want? Note: the series is up to five stories currently, but there’s apparently more to come)

AliuIce0814 (aliuice0814 on LJ): Your AI Holds the Answers (Avengers/Iron Man. Tony, Bruce, the rest of the Team, Jarvis. "Sure, he's the one who suggested it, but Tony's more interested in finding out how falling from space didn't kill him than in chowing down on shawarma." A missing scene from a missing scene, and...yeah, it could very well happen just like this.)

AlyKat: "So I Keep on Waiting ('til I’m Back Where I Belong) " (Avengers. Clint/Phil. "There were a lot of things S.H.I.E.L.D trained its agents for. There were a lot of things Clint Barton learned to pick up on his own. But there’s one thing his time in the circus, on the streets, and that S.H.I.E.L.D couldn’t prepare him for. Being turned into a dog? Yeah, S.H.I.E.L.D and the streets kinda failed to train him for that one." I admit it, I am an unabashed animal transformation fan in this fandom, and for the Phil/Clint pairing, it's all about the corgis. This story? Is long and original - within the conventions of this sort of transformation story, of course - and really very touching at times. I cried. I mean, it's not as if that never happens when I read fic, but... *g* )

Alwayslera: "This is Feeling" (Avengers. Natasha/Clint, Maria, Phil, Fury, Team. "Natasha is not emotionally stunted. She understands feelings. They're just chemical equations in the brain." One of the first things I thought as I was reading this was that this Natasha might have had trouble with emotions, but she was not a a robot - and then I discovered that the author had included a tumblr-style tag that basically said that very thing. Smart, insightful, really great relationship dynamics of all sorts.)

Amanuensis (amanuensis on LJ): " Corruption and Crème Brûleé" ( Avengers. Loki/Clint Barton. " Loki finds that Agent Barton is peerless. In all things. For a mortal. Which is unforgivable." During the movie, so let's just say this is not a happily-ever-after story. Potentially spoilery content information: extremely dubious consent. Not at all my usual thing, but excellently done.)

Amanuensis: "In Other Words, Thursday" (Avengers. Clint/Natasha. "Assassination, extraction, and morning-after breakfast. It's their version of domestic." Just right, especially in terms of the relationship dynamic between Natasha and Clint.)

AnonEMouse: "The Heart in the Machine" (Avengers. Tony, Pepper, Phil/Clint. "Clint's code is faulty and Tony is determined to fix it, or, how Tony Stark became a matchmaker." A really fascinating style, all from Tony's pov. His internal running monologue is excellent.)

Anonymous: "Kiss and (Don't) Tell" (Avengers/Captain America. Steve/Sam Wilson, Tony, Team. "Steve makes a new friend. Tony just wants the world to make sense." Written in response to an anon-meme prompt, and...if the story of Steve with a new black, political activist boyfriend seems like a bit of a 'teaching moment,' it also feels completely right characterization-wise for everybody. Which is to say that if Tony's a complete snoop and prone to spouting off the sort of glib 'post-racist' comments that are actually, you know...kind of racist, well, it's not entirely out of character? Nicely done...and I wish there was more in this 'verse.)

Aria (aria on Dreamwidth): the "Darcy Cycle" series (Avengers/Thor. Loki/Darcy Lewis. "Darcy thinks of the sharp curve of Loki's smile, of his long pale fingers and his eyes like chips of ice. Some things are much more amazing and important than photosynthesis and YouTube and the ability to eat a whole box of Pop Tarts." - which is the summary for the first of two stories in which...okay, sometimes, when people say that girls like 'bad boys,' they don't mean really bad, but this Loki is. And the thing is, just like with canon!Loki, there are perfectly reasonable explanations for why he acts the way he does, but explanations aren't the same things as excuses. As for Darcy...let's just say 'best girlfriend ever' and leave it at that. Potentially spoilery content information: the end of the world: does that need a warning?)

Aria (aria on Dreamwidth): "Shatter" (Avengers/Thor. Loki/Thor, Jane, Darcy, Erik, various Asgardians. ""Loki," Odin says, heavy with disappointment and regret for all he has to raise his voice, "Odinson. I cast you out."" AU, but just what Loki could be (and sometimes is in canon): so hurt, so prideful, so wary, so in need of validation - and love. A really smart character study and engaging story)

Aria: "#TeamJanet" (Avengers. Darcy/Janet Van Dyne, Jane/Thor. "Darcy feels herself starting to get disappointed, but thirty seconds later she's tempted to find a sharpie and write #TeamJanet on her forehead as a reminder to herself to never ever make snap judgments, because apparently Janet can shoot electricity from her hands, and is therefore the coolest human Darcy has ever seen." As Darcy says in her first line: "That is a superhero team that could use more ladies," and so we're given The Wasp. Go ladies!)

arthur_177 "Shooting gloves and champagne glasses" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Clint fits in well enough in a lot of places; high society charity balls are not one of them. /nfortunately, that is exactly where he is, and that is exactly where he is making a fool of himself. / To add insult to injury, Coulson is there to witness it, and of the many things he perhaps wouldn't mind revealing to Coulson, this is definitively not one of them." )

arysteia (arysteia on LJ): "The Twice-Told Tale" (Avengers/iron Man/Captain America. Steve/Tony, Team, Others. " For someone he'd hero-worshipped for so long, Steve Rogers in the flesh is a pretty big disappointment. For one thing, he keeps looking at Tony as though he reminds him of someone else, and even if he never says anything, Tony's pretty sure it's his father. A lifetime of not measuring up to Howard's expectations is more than enough, thank you very much, and he's certainly not going to make an effort to live up to any of Steve's. Steve's pretty clearly failed to live up to his expectations, in any case, and that's not hypocritical at all." Just when the story seemed to be settling into a really lovely relationship development story for Steve and Tony, it takes a turn...and becomes even better. Very cool.)

ashen_key: "Romanoff" (Avengers. Natasha, Clint, Phil, Bruce. " “Not Romanova?” Coulson asks. / (They've been calling her 'Natalia Romanova' for years.) / “No,” she says." A very interesting gen piece about names and identity.)

astolat (astolat on LJ): "Hug Therapy" ( Avengers/Thor. Thor/Loki. " "I am hugging you," Thor explained. "That you may know I love you, despite your madness."" Slightly preposterous set-up and yet pretty great nonetheless, with a perfect Thor p.o.v. )

athena4lynn "Vibrate to that Iron String" (Avengers. Clint, Natasha, Phil. "In which Clint's hearing is damaged, Natasha learns to trust Coulson, and both of them help Clint get his groove back." Pre-movie canon, though harking back to Clint's hearing loss in comics canon. Good progression of Clint, Nat, and Phil adapting to Clint's new reality.)

atop_gray_clouds: "A Strange New World" (Avengers/Captain America/Thor. Steve/Darcy. "Steve feels very alone in the 21st century, and everyone is too in awe of him to touch him casually, leaving him touch-starved; meanwhile, in comes Darcy Lewis, who thinks nothing of it. Steve can't get enough." Some odd formatting issues, but a very insightful - and sometimes very touching, no pun intended - story in which Steve is actually allowed to be "just a guy.")

Atra (atrata on dreamwidth): "Almost No One Makes It Out" (Iron Man (Avengers). Tony, Pepper, Rhodey, Stane, etc. "What would have happened if Tony hadn't been born filthy rich? A military AU." This Tony's leading a completely different life from the one he led in canon. For one thing, canon!Tony was never given the "choice" to either go to jail or enlist. But he - and Pepper and Rhodey and Stane and...others - are instantly recognizable. Perfect characterizations and a narrative that feels so real that sometimes it's hard to remember that this isn't how Tony Stark's story was always meant to be told.

Atra (atrata on LJ/DW): "People Who Know My Sins" (Iron Man. Tony/Pepper. "Dancing is not in her job description, but neither is mopping up blood at 4 in the morning. She does it anyway." Pepper's reactions are so perfectly drawn, the reader might as well be her.)

Azul Bleu (azul_bleu on LJ): "Shadow in the Stream" (Team+Phil, with elements of Steve/Tony and Phil/Clint. "Caught in the grips of spectacular hangovers, the Avengers wish Tony wasn't around to enable them, and a power decides to grant them their wish: a world without Tony Stark. How do you change reality back to normal without your resident genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, anyway?" A...magical AU, of sorts, with a dash of it's a Wonderful Life thrown into the mix. The initial set-up maybe felt slightly out of character to me (only in everybody's willingness to shift the blame for their 'conditions' to Tony), but that was a minor element in a very original and often moving story.)

Bandearg_Rois: "Bridged" (Avengers. clint/Darcy, Tony/Pepper. "Clint's never been very good at being 'Normal.' Thankfully, neither has Darcy." A romance...in multiple time zones. And as a warning, if you - as I - are used to stories in which certain deaths never really happened, this is not one of those stories. )

BeatriceEagle: "http://archiveofourown.org/works/465812" (Iron Man. Tony-centric, with background Tony/Pepper. "Tony agrees to see a therapist for his, you know, fairly obvious issues. No one is more surprised than he is." Written pre-Avengers, but taking the Team dynamics into account. Well written, and...okay, so despite my having zero experience with therapy - and how that's true at my advanced state of geezerdom is beyond me - I'm very drawn to characters-in-therapy [see various previously recced Loki-in-therapy stories). I can't speak to how realistic this story is in actuality, but it’s clearly well researched and, more importantly, it feels right. Potentially spoilery content information: PTSD and EMDR therapy, plus negative comments - from Tony - about the use of meds as a treatment option))

belmanoir (belmanoir on LJ): the "Flying From the Blast" series ( Avengers/Thor/Iron Man. Loki&Thor, Loki/Tony. " Thor and Loki go on the run together post-Avengers, road-trip across Australia, and get family therapy." Starting with Thor's rescue of Loki from Odin's version of [Norse myth canon] justice, the series deals with family therapy [which shouldn't make sense, but does], a road trip, and the development of a relationship between former enemies. Very engaging and frequently touching. Potentially spoilery content information: Consensual humiliation and pain in the fourth part of the series, Tony-centric alcohol abuse throughout, suicidal ideation, and Jotun-inspired self hatred on Loki's part.)

bendingwind: "Adventures in Social Media" (Phil/Clint. "It starts with a youtube video." Because, you know, if there's one video of Phil taking down armed robbers with a sack of flour, there are probably others. 1K)

bendingwind (bendingwind on LJ): "Dreaming" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Natasha, fury, others. "What if the person sleeping beside you was never who you thought he was?" I read the summary and then read the - often heart-wrenching - story without knowing more and that really worked for me. If you need to know more and not just let things unfold, check out my spoilers. I will say that while I really liked this story, I felt it could have stood to have been a little longer maybe, especially in the final section. Still, this is an original and a satisfying story. Potentially spoilery content information: Phil is...not Phil, at least some of the time in this story; he's a Skrull, a Marvel!verse alien that can take on others' appearances. And since there's an established relationship between Phil and Clint - or so Clint thinks - technically, we're looking at Dubious consent.)

BewareTheIdes15: "After All of the Sparks [You're Still Alone in the Dark]" (Avengers/Iron Man/Captain America. Steve/Tony. “Tony has always struggled with the concepts of positive versus negative attention." This Tony may be further along the self-destructive-and-needy spectrum than I usually imagine him and the same is true for Steve where his natural protectiveness and take-charge attitude is concerned, but despite that, there's something at the core of the way both men are characterized in this story that feels right emotionally. Potentially spoilery content information: alcohol abuse)

BlackEyedGirl: "And Begin Again Tomorrow" (Avengers/Captain America/Ironman. Steve, Tony, the Team. “Steve can tell there’s something wrong with Tony. He just doesn’t know what happened. Or why Tony’s friends seem to think it’s his fault." What seems like a small plot point turns into something very significant, psychologically speaking. Nothing happens, on one level, but the story still manages to be emotional.)

BlackEyedGirl (blackeyed_girl on LJ): "Graded on the Sanctity of Patience" (Avengers. Always-Female!Coulson/Clint. “Around about the time Phillipa Jane told her middle-school teacher that Phil wasn’t a nickname, it was her name and not a difficult one to remember, she picked up a reputation. That hasn’t really gone away." Phil - although a woman here - is still recognizably Phil Coulson, in a story that has really smart things to say about competency and loyalty and gender roles. The Phil/Clint scenario is significant, but in a lot of ways, this story feels more like Phil-centric gen to me. Potentially spoilery content information: discussion of possible rape of a missing agent in section eight.)

BlackEyedGirl: "like catalysts, we make things happen" (Avengers. Bruce/Tony, background Tony/Pepper and Bruce/Betty, with all parties informed. "Bruce is counting time. Tony is making a graph. None of this can be plotted in three dimensions but that doesn't mean it can't be understood." Reads like Gen, but...it might not always be? Excellent interactions between Bruce and Tony, in which tony learns when not to poke and Bruce learns - maybe - when not to run)

BlackEyedGirl (black-eyedgirl on LJ): "The Time to Find a Place to Land" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, The Team, Others. " By Phil’s count, this is his third attempt at bringing the Avengers together, although he will admit his participation in the second attempt was more symbolic than anything else. He hadn’t expected Stark to be the easiest sell, or Barton to be the most problematic, but things have changed since he’s been away. " Fantastic voices all around, and an excellent look at the fall-out from Loki's actions during the movie, especially where Clint is concerned. The team is really a team here. Potentially spoilery content information: Phil - who theoretically ends up dead in the movie - is only in a coma, but for ten months, the team thinks he's gone. Clint's happiness at discovering Phil's alive is only matched by his anger that Phil's last thought was to use his death to build the team.)

BlackEyedGirl (black-eyedgirl on LJ): "Truths, Lies and the Tipping Point" (Avengers. Tony, Steve, all the Avengers. "The news report seems more interested in the argument between the team during the fight than the way they eventually won. And then it gets worse." A short piece that veers towards Steve/Tony at the end, but honestly feels more like the best sort of team/relationship gen.)

BlackEyedGirl (black_eyedgirl on LJ): "Untitled" (Avengers. Tony/Clint, sort of...but mostly Gen. "Tony isn’t paying a whole lot of attention when Barton appears in his lab." Post-movie, and…Clint knows that something is wrong. Really pretty perfect, with Tony as the most right person Clint could have gone to in these circumstances.)

bobbimorsed (Sin_Stained_Ink): "Don't Fear The Reaper" (clint/Phil. "It’s hard to fear the reaper when he’s been one of the only consistent things in your life." And if you didn't guess: Phil is the reaper. A 'Dead Like Me' vibe, and bittersweet.)

bobbimorsed / Sin_Stained_Ink (sin_stained_ink on LJ/agentsonofcoul on tumblr): "We're Gonna Drown Every Doubt "_ (Avengers. Phil, Team, background Phil/Clint. "He wakes up in hospital with years of his life missing." Post-movie, and Phil is...alive? Interesting povs and not-at-all-unbelievable actions from SHIELD.)

boombangbing (boombangbing on LJ): "Direction" (Avengers/Captain America. Steve/Darcy, Tony, Fury, Jane, others. "Steve is not ninety four years old, he's barely twenty seven and he has no idea what he's doing. It's a good thing he's not the only one." So, Steve being a virgin, as he is here, is just about believable, but if you go with the premise, this is a completely charming story - and Darcy's no-filter personality works really well with this Steve. "Adorbs," as they say. Note: as of the end of July 2012, this has now become a series, with the latest story being "The Bubble," comprised of some really lovely domesticity - and sex - interspersed with some SHIELD and Team interactions)

and

boombangbing (boombangbing on LJ): "The Bubble" (Avengers/Captain America/Thor. Steve/Darcy. "Most of Darcy's past relationships have involved getting high, playing video games, and arguing with each other; it's kind of freaking her out a little how functional she and Steve are. It's like being a real adult or something." This is now the third story in the Direction series. Mostly domestic with some holiday and meet-the-family moments interspersed with the sex (*g*), but there's some SHIELD and Team interactions as well - and it's all very charming. The story could be read as a standalone maybe, but it's probably better to start with the first story in the series.)

boombangbing: "Flew Away or Started Sinking" (Avengers. Bruce/Jane. "Bruce comes back to New York eight months after Tony dropped him off at a ferry terminal, with a nasty cough, no money, and nowhere to stay. Jane answers his shot in the dark phonecall, and suddenly he's helping to build wormholes while S.H.I.E.L.D. are quietly watching his every move." I'd absolutely never thought of this pairing before, but it works. Jane and Bruce are in character and...they're adults - even if both spend part of the story being silently chastised by Selvig)

boombangbing (boombangbing on LJ): the "Magnetic" series (Avengers/Iron Man/Captain America. Tony/Pepper/Steve - in all combinations, eventually. Author's summary for the first part: "The Courting of Tony Stark" - "It only takes her nine years to say 'I love you' back." Massively long series and still nominally incomplete, but the end of each individual story works as a logical stopping point. The series leads to a Steve/Pepper/Tony threesome, but it's also a team building story and a look at Tony's psyche, which...is a kind of scary/sad place to be at times. The first story in the series - 50,000 words - follows Pepper from her earliest days at Stark Industries, through her rise to CEO and her developing relationship with Tony. Pepper's smart and sexy, Steve is earnest and loving, and Tony is a complete mess, but brilliant and persistent and wildly loyal in his own weird Tony Stark way to the people he loves. Could use some extra proofreading, especially in the later parts of the series, but really engaging and fun)

boombangbing: "Under My Skin" (Avengers. Steve/Darcy, Everybody. "Steve is a broke tattoo artist with bankruptcy in his imminent future, and a bunch of friends like the cast of RENT. Darcy wants to 1) get a tattoo, and 2) tap that." An engaging and fun AU, with a sweet relationship between Darcy and Steve.)

brilligspoons (brilligspoons on LJ): "Checkboxes" (Avengers. Clint/Phil/Natasha. " Phil quickly loses control of a situation he wasn't really sure he wanted to be in to begin with." Written for a prompt asking for an Asexual!Phil. Pepper sends a link for a specific kind of online dating site to Phil. Short...and sweet. )

calicokat (calicokat on LJ): "for today or the rest of my life" (Iron Man. Pepper/OC, Pepper/Tony. "Pepper finds a boyfriend. Tony hates to share." Only takes Iron Man into account officially, but the characterizations feel completely believable in a post-Avengers world. Good sense of how conflicted Pepper would likely be regarding Tony on a personal level and just generally smart.)

calicokat (calicokat on LJ): "my life with the thrill kill cult " (Avengers/Thor/Iron Man. Tony/Pepper, Tony/Loki. "One heart can hold hatred, lust, devotion and fear, whether the heart of a human or of a god." Dark and often powerful. Potentially spoilery content information, comprised of the penultimate lines of the story, so be advised that these are actual spoilers: "There's no happy ending. Not for anybody. The edges are frayed, the jigsaw pieces ill fitting, the world coarse to the soul. Loki ever half-mad, Tony ever half-human and Pepper ever dignified, though greying and slowly gravitating toward the world beyond the veil.")

casspeach (casspeach on LJ/DW): "C2H5OH +1" (Avengers/Captain America. Steve, Team, plus Clint/Phil. "Five times Steve drank alcohol like an adult, and one time he didn't. / Or five(ish) times Clint didn't drink, and one(ish) time he did." The way the Steve and the rest of the team treat alcohol is a really interesting way to frame Steve's encounters with the realities of the future/present - and love and friendship and trust.)

casspeach: "Losing Sight of the Shore" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Coulson gets hit by a beam. Clint steps up to help him out. He's the obvious choice, because, well, none of the others are right for the job. You want reasons? He's got reasons - detailed inarguable ones. None of them having to do with the pathetic torch he's been carrying for his handler forever." Clint's a little insecure, Phil's a little vulnerable, and...'aliens made them do it.")

celesteennui (celestennui on LJ): "Greatest Creations" (Iron Man/Avengers. Tony/Pepper, hints of Natasha/Clint, Steve, Fury, and Rhodey. " Snapshots of Tony's life as he figures this whole "fatherhood" thing out. For a former self-centered playboy, he isn't doing too bad." As the summary says. Kid!Fic of a sort, but mostly a smart and often touching look at a side of Tony we very rarely see, even in fic. Some outbranching into the larger comics!verse, but nothing that can't be appreciated by movie!verse only readers. Note: this story is now part of a series - “Invictus” - to which has been added a second story: ”Mother’s Two Good Eyes”. It features Frigga and Loki, and brings the reader through Loki’s childhood and on past the Avengers movie. A great Frigga pov, and...this is the very best sort of Loki-centric tale, one which goes some way toward explaining his actions, but doesn’t attempt to excuse them.)

Clarice Chiara Sorcha (claireoujisama on LJ): "The Uncertainty Principle" (Avengers/Thor. Jane/Thor, Loki&Thor, Darcy, Phil, Tony Stark. "When Jane idly wishes for some unconventional input as she works to open the Einstein-Rosen bridge, she neither quite expects nor appreciates the visit she receives. Things only go from bad to worse when Thor does arrive back. Not only is she about to discover the awkward logistics of a relationship born of less than a week of falling in love, Loki is determined to ensure that if he is going to suffer, then so must everybody else." Post-Avengers AU, Jane-centric (which I never expected to like), and incredibly smart about relationship dynamics between Jane and Thor and Loki. For people who don't typically read fic where Loki has a large role to play, let me just say that on a woobiefication scale of 1 to 10, this Loki is about a 1.2 for most of the story, i.e., it's absolutely worth reading even for those who aren't inclined to like Loki.)

Closer: the "Taking Action" series (Avengers, etc. Tony/Pepper/Steve, Bruce/Natasha, Clint/Phil, background Thor/Jane. "A single timeline told from three different perspectives, involving three different relationships. / Steve wants what Tony and Pepper have, and maybe wants Tony and Pepper. / Bruce and Natasha are both looking for someone to care for, and need a little caring-for themselves. Clint is just so damned glad to have Coulson back he won't ask for anything more, but Coulson has other ideas." The series - the first story of which I'd recced previously - is now complete, and...it's really lovely. All the new relationships work, no matter how unlikely they might seem to outsiders, and the team? I couldn't love them any more than I do. Potentially spoilery content information: If returns from the dead bother you, well...you probably wouldn't be reading about Steve, but Phil comes back too - and yes, he was dead before returning.)

Closer: "Some People Just Collect Stamps" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Team. "Phil Coulson wakes up in a hospital bed. Well, damn." Post-movie, and established relationship for Phil and Clint...not that the rest of the team know. Smart and believable and loving, with some wonderfully supportive team dynamics.)

coffeebuddha (coffeebuddha on LJ): "Caught In Death's Shadow " (Clint/Phil. "Who really takes that much notice of yet another man in a suit, anyway?" Dark, creepy, and wonderful. Potentially spoilery content information: A very cool riff on the myth of Hades and Persephone.)

coffeebuddha (coffeebuddha on LJ/DW): "Things That Shine" (Avengers/Thor. Bruce/Darcy, Tony, Natasha, others. " Darcy was seven the first time she fell in love. / The second time it happens, she's twenty-five, hung over as all get out, and has a real chance of getting shot, which is actually more alarming than the giant green guy who's holding her hostage." The longest section of the Manic Monday series, "Things That Shine" follows the unlikely, but adorable developing relationship between Darcy Lewis and Bruce Banner. Sweet and often laugh-out-loud funny.)

coffeesuperhero: "thanks for the memories" (Clint/Phil. "He's traveling light, but he's got more to carry than he can bear." Wistful and sad at times, but...somehow they both find a way.)

cognomen (shawarma-palace on tumblr/cog_nomen on LJ ): " How Many Scientists Does it Take to Screw in the Stark Tower?" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Bruce/Tony (Pepper) "Stark had poked right through that, deliberately learning a foreign field of scientific study just to be able to converse on the same level as Bruce could - and with a true understanding of the subject. He realizes now that it was a calculated move. Stark had pierced his shell the way minor upsets or pokes with sharp objects couldn't do." Post-movie, Bruce pov, and...yeah, just the right tone. Both Bruce and the story are respectful of Tony’s relationship with Pepper, too, which I appreciate.)

copperbadge (sam storyteller on DW): "Black Amex" (Avengers. Bruce, Steve, Tony. "Bruce isn't sure he wants to use a credit card Tony gave him. Steve isn't sure he even knows how." Basically, Bruce and Steve go shopping. Just a really nice getting-to-know-each-other-and-the-world fic.)

Copperbadge (sam_storyteller on DW, copperbadge on LJ): "Epilogue" (Avengers. All the Avengers, plus a variety of SHIELD operatives and Loki. "After the fighting is over, then come the hot baths, ice packs, resurrection from the dead, political maneuvering, and happy endings (not like that, Tony)." A charming, bantery, team-building, lowkey, post-movie 'fix-it': just right!)

copperbadge (sam vimes/sam_storyteller on DW): "Film Studies, or, Four Films About Captain America and One By Him" (Avengers. Steve, Team, Phil, Pepper. "Steve Rogers is no stranger to the silver screen." Steve - with the help of the other Avengers - catches up with present-day pop culture by revisiting the past. Sweet... and often - in chapter 3 especially - very funny.)

copperbadge (sam storyteller on DW): "Homefront" (Avengers. Steve/Tony, Team. " Steve Rogers is a capable leader, a kind and cheerful man, a good friend, a strong role model, and a loyal soldier. He's also teetering on the edge of suicide." Author warnings: Extensive discussion of grief, PTSD, some talk of suicidal impulses. Unwise drinking practices and some mention of alcoholism. And despite those warnings, there is a great deal of heart and love of all sorts in this story.)

copperbadge (sam vimes/sam storyteller on DW): "Robot Trip" (Avengers. Tony & Steve, Dummy, Pepper. "Tony is driving from Malibu to Manhattan with a robot in the back seat and Captain America riding escort at Pepper's behest. What could possibly go wrong?" Adorable and funny and sweet. )

cruelest_month (cruelestmonth on tumblr): the "5+1 Avenger Times" series (Avengers. Clint/Phil. Technically, this series is incomplete, but the two 'five times' stories that exist as of this rec are sweet, mostly domestic, and often funny stories about how Clint and Phil are generally "awesome, accommodating, and thoughtful boyfriends" - and sometimes aren't. *g*)

CSI Clue: "Copra Cabana" (Iron Man. Tony/Pepper, Rhodey eventually. "After an accident, Tony and Pepper find themselves depending on each other in a way they never expected." 2009 - i.e., before even IM2 - and Tony and Pepper get stranded on a deserted island in the middle of the Pacific. Romance novel come to life, yo! *g*)

cy_chase: "The Malibu Avengers" (Clint/Phil, Team. A Hockey AU. Yes, really. Part one summary: "Phil Coulson has spent half his life working toward the Stanley Cup. The Malibu Avengers might finally be the team to take him there.")

daisysusan (daisysusan on LJ): "and make it seem effortless" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Tony/Pepper/Bruce. "It's a surprisingly comfortable relationship that develops between them" Domestic and charming. And honestly, post-movie, there are very few combinations of characters that I'm more interested in seeing live some version of happily-ever-after.)

dani_the_girl (dani_the_girl on Dreamwidth): "Somewhere I belong" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Bruce, Tony. "Tony's part of a team now but that doesn't mean he likes it. Bruce takes the radical step of talking to him about it." Post-Avengers movie. A quiet and honest moment between the two men. Very nice.)

deadonarrival: "The Marble Arch" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Clint deals with the aftermath of the final battle and discovers he has some pretty strong allies in places he least expected. But can they really solve his biggest problem?" Heartbreaking. At least for a while.)

deadpool (ohvegeta on tumblr): "The Archer and the Monster" (Avengers/Hulk. Bruce/Clint, the Team. "Bruce's stress limitations keep him from being intimate with Clint. When Tony gets wind of this he makes it his personal crusade to find a way to fix this for his friend (with some hesitant help from Steve along the way)." an established relationship story, although - initially - one that doesn't involve sex, and really, more stories need to deal with this absolutely canon issue, i.e., that the Norton Hulk movie establishes Bruce’s inability to have sex without transforming. Good pacing and when a plot of sorts rears its head [that's not the point of the story, but still!] it's actually pretty suspenseful.)

dentalfloss (dentalfloss on fanfiction.net): "The Damages We Keep" (Avengers. Clint, Phil, Team. "C/C prompt meme fill: injured in battle. Looking for whumpage! Hawkeye is wounded during a fight and doesn't let on; even afterwards he's hiding it. What's the injury, how bad is it, and just how pissed off is Phil when he discovers it?" Marked as "pre-slash" by the author, this story reads far more as Gen, but with exactly as much in the way of feelings as any relationship-centric story ever could. This is a well-constructed story about something I think about often: just how difficult is it for a non-superhuman to fight as a superhero.)

dentalfloss: "Through the Glass" (Avengers. Clint, Team, OCs. " “Thoughts Coulson?” Fury asked, finger tapping idly on Barton’s file. / “He’s dangerous. He has trust issues that we may not be able to breach, he will not like working with others, he will lie to us about his motivations every chance he gets and, most likely, be successful every time.” Coulson’s gaze drifted back to the empty chair Barton had chosen earlier, boxed in the corner yet protected on as many sides as possible. “It won’t be easy, but if we can win his loyalty he has the potential to be the asset we’re looking for.” / Fury agreed, though neither of them would ever dream that they already had Barton’s loyalty, or that the price it cost was so steep." This is - and I'm about to give spoilers now, so get out while you can - a mind control story, and not a Loki-centric one. Honestly, it was far more difficult for me to read than any Loki mind control story I've ever read - very painful at times, which isn't usually something I gravitate towards when I read fic - and yet I'm still reccing it...highly. It's a very different take on Hawkeye and his relationship to S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Team, with a completely satisfying conclusion. Note: the author tagged this as Clint/Phil, but although there/s a definite and pervasive pairing subtext throughout much of the story, this feels much more like Clint-centric gen...in a good way.)

Desdemona: "Choose Wisely" (Avengers. Clint, Phil. “Coulson doesn’t have to. He has the right to be hurt. To be human. Clint can barely remember what that’s like." For those of you who expect a typical happy ending story from my recs, this...isn’t one. But it’s also not unhappy. it’s just very real.)

DevilDoll (devildoll on LJ): "Hold My Breath and Jump Right In " (Avengers/Hulk. Bruce/Natasha. "She won't be happy until she's pushed back at him, shown him she's not afraid, proven she can handle him." Post-movie, character-based...and very hot.)

DevilDoll: "Rule Number Nine" (Avengers. Steve/Darcy. ""Darcy was right, Steve admits to himself later that day. He never has a date for anything." In which Steve and Darcy go on Not Dates and more." Steve and Darcy are both really lovely...and their non-relationship exists in the midst of the real world, which is the best thing. Note: mostly written before the Avengers movie, so some events may not match with canon.)

DevilDoll (devildoll on LJ): "Semophore" (Avengers. Tony/Pepper, Tony/Steve. "I’m trying to like you, Tony. You’re just making it very hard." Written before the movie came out, and my first Steve/Tony fic. I'd been wary of reading this pairing because, quite frankly, without a comics background - I'm a casual movie fan only - it had been hard for me to get a real "yes, this is obvious!" vibe for Tony and Steve. This story, however, deals well well with all the reasons these two men shouldn't be together – and then transitions perfectly into all the reasons they should, all the while not demonizing Pepper, whom I love. Plus, the 'team-y' stuff is excellent - as are the original characters. And...yes, I cried five times while reading this; in the words of tumblr fandom: I had all the feels.)

earlofcardigans, tascioni (phenylic): "never leave alone from a corner table" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Natasha. "Clint and Phil have most of their meaningful conversations over fries and milkshakes." Low-key and quiet relationship development. Works as gen or pre-slash, but the point is, it works. Some of the transitions between scenes seem a little disjointed to me, but I really like the tone of the narrative - and Clint's pov is just different enough from what I usually read to be quite intriguing.)

Eb (_eb on LJ): "The Man Makes the Suit" (Iron. Man. Tony/Pepper. "Tony faces a new crisis while dealing with his old demons." Great voices and an engaging plot that works perfectly with the canon-true characterizations.) Currently in a locked post)

Echo: "A.I.'s and Lullabyes" (Avengers. Tony, Team, JARVIS. "Tony is suddenly a quiet, wary five year old boy. The rest of the team are less than completely sure about what to do about that." There are a lot of de-aging stories in this fandom, many of which are very successful in examing the 'inner child' of specific characters through...an outer child, but this story does an extremely good job of letting us - and Bruce and Natasha in particular - see through to the very core of Tony. A little heartbreaking, but hopeful at the same time.)

eleanor_lavish (eleanor_lavish on LJ): "I've got your words in me" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. "Clint doesn’t fuck up assignments very often. This time, he’s pretty glad he did." Pre-movie and so the coming together of the team is very AU'ish by now, but the story’s really charming in a distinctly old-school way.)

eleanor_lavish (eleanor_lavish on LJ): "She's a swell gal, with a gun in her hand" (Avengers/Captain America. Steve/Natasha. "Steve thinks Natasha Romanoff is the most impressive girl he’s ever met." Sparring as foreplay and learning each other's boundaries: what could be better? Really lovely. I'd like to see more of this!)

ellievolia: "Started up the clocks" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Sometimes relationships have to grow through friendship, pushing and pulling, pain, denial and regrets." Phil once had a wife. A very insightful story about loss and recovery, written before the movie.)

enigma_eggroll: "A Space Between" (Avengers/Thor. Steve/Darcy. "A man out of time and a woman out of place, they find their way forward in an uncertain world." Post-movie. Gentle and romantic. Note: Now, "A Space Between" has become the first story in a quite lovely series)

entanglednow: "Falling to Earth" (Avengers. Steve/Tony. "Snow is the beginner's substance of choice for all cave-ins and trapped-in-the-wilderness scenarios. Why couldn't it have been snow?" A pretty perfect "forced to conserve body heat" story...honest and insightful.)

Epiphanyx7 "The Butterfingers G.D.I. Stark Guide to Problem Solving" (Avengers. Bots and Tony! Team, with background Clint/Phil " Tony begins to notice that things are going missing from his workshop... and discovers that his bots have been hiding a very, very big secret from him. Or rather, a very, very small one. / In which Dummy is a kleptomaniac, You is painfully shy, Butterfingers is a programming genius, JARVIS is a sarcastic sonofabitch, Pepper takes care of Tony outside of the workshop, Bruce is Tony's boo, Thor is Tony's favourite, Clint is actually kind of smart, Steve has terrible timing, and problem-solving is never simple or easy." Wonderful - if sometimes misplaced - Bot love for Tony. )

ereshai: "Right in Front of Your Face" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Phil and Clint get engaged and go out together to spread the news. but everyone is just shocked to hear they're together." So there are a thousand "everybody thinks they're dating" stories in this and every other fandom; this story is the other side of that trope, and it's kind of perfect and very funny.)

etben (etben on LJ): "break common laws in twos and threes" (Iron Man/Avengers. Tony/Pepper. "How Tony And Pepper Make It Work." Quiet and simple and more conversation than anything else. Just...Tony and Pepper negotiating their lives between Iron Man 2 and The Avengers.)

everythingispoetry: "Much of you is repetition" (Avengers. Clint & Tony. "Adjusting is healing is forgetting, or so Clint thinks. Tony teaches him he is wrong and kind of saves his life in the meantime." Clint dealing with the fallout of Loki's mind control after the movie, and...let me start with a warning: for self injury and suicidal ideation. I have no personal experience with self injury, and as far as I know, if I have friends who use that as a coping mechanism - and I might, of course - they don't share it with me. But from an outsider's perspective, Clint's reactions and needs and motivations feel right...feel honest. The odd parallels of Clint's situation with Tony's - the way Tony understands - is great. Given my own headcanon for the strength of Clint and Natasha's relationship (regardless of whether or not it might be romantic/sexual, because that's irrelevant here), I sometimes feel an odd sense of unease with stories that give somebody other than Natasha (or Phil, when he's around) the right to "get Clint" best, like it's a weird sort of betrayal, but in this story, Tony's kinship with Clint takes nothing away from the relationship Natasha and Clint share.)

fade_like_starlight: "Break the Ice" (Avengers. Steve/Darcy, Phil, Pepper, Tony. "After Steve is photographed at a publicity event with a woman who is 'almost' wearing a dress, Fury demands that Coulson fix it. Rather than shutting down the entire tabloid magazine industry (which really is outside SHIELD's parameters), Coulson takes a different approach and decides to find a girlfriend for the Captain." Steve and Darcy's "fake" relationship is utterly adorable.)

fangirlSevera: "The Rise and Fall of Office Romances" (Avengers/iron Man. Phil Coulson/Pepper Potts, Pepper Potts/Tony Stark, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson. "Professional, responsible, efficient, and dependable. When Pepper gets to know Agent Coulson, she finds a kindred spirit. Their dates would be perfect if not for the constant interruptions by Tony Stark or Clint Barton. But what does it say about Phil and Pepper that they let them interrupt?" Just as it says on the label. A story in which, just for a moment, even *I* - who ships very differently - wanted Phil and Pepper to end up together *g*)

Femme (femmequixotic on LJ): "Bigmouth Strikes Again" (Avengers/Thor/Iron Man. Tony/Loki, Pepper/Phil (implied), Others. " Tony doesn't think he and Loki actually have a thing going. Well. Not until Tony fucks it up, at least." Established relationship and...how did these two get together? Ordinarily I'd care, but not in this case because the relationship - even as Tony tries his damnedest to sabotage it - is perfect, for Tony/Loki values of perfect. And the story itself is a perfect combination of funny and sexy and serious, with an honest engagement in some actual family and relationship issues. So good. Potentially spoilery content information: Something much like adultery, even though Tony's a bit blinkered initially about being in a committed relationship.)

foxxcub: "Aripâ " (Phil/Clint, Clint/Natasha. ""I wish I could fly," he whispers." Wing!fic, of all things for me to be reccing, starting with Clint's days in the circus. Extremely well done, and a good look at the way these people show vulnerability...and trust.)

foxxcubb: the "Bulletproof" series (Avengers. Steve/Tony, Clint/Phil, Others. "College/University AU" Technically incomplete, but the two current stories both reach natural resting points. The first - eponymously titled "Bulletproof" - has this summary: "At age fifteen, Steve Rogers had been in love with Tony Stark. / By age twenty, he’d (mostly) gotten over it. And then he promptly became Tony Stark's fuck buddy," and the second - called "Launch Your Assault" - has this summary: "Phil Coulson was more than halfway through his six year plan, and everything was chugging along nicely. Unfortunately, he hadn’t foreseen a cocky junior Art major waltzing into his life, or his floor." They're...enjoyable! I'm not usually a college AU kind of reader, but both stories definitely work for me.)

Frea_O: "The Woman in the Crosshairs " (Avengers. Clint/Natasha. "In which Clint has a new hobby and Natasha isn't curious, until she is. Black Widow and Hawkeye, their partnership—and what it means—throughout the years." Do I really believe that Clint could be a secret best-selling author? Oh hell no, and yet, I absolutely buy it here...and love it.)

fuckitfireeverything: "flying in the face of science " (Avengers Phil/Clint, Steve/Tony, Steve/Peggy. "Four years ago, Steve Rogers was the only returning crew member of the Ares I expedition, a research mission to Mars gone wrong. Half of his crew died, and he left two of them -- James Barnes and Peggy Carter -- behind so he could return to Earth and get help. The day he got back to Earth, Phil Coulson began planning a rescue mission, the Ares II. This is the story of that mission." NASA-style AU, smart and original. )

galaxysoup (galaxysoup on LJ): "Amateur Theatrics" (Avengers. Loki, Clint, Other Avengers. "In which Thor’s primary problem-solving method (a mighty blow from Mjolnir) fails to have the desired effect on a magical artifact, and his secondary method (a mightier blow from Mjolnir) proves to be actively disastrous." Loki's villainous schemes are thwarted by an accident that leads to genderswaps, body exchanges, power losses, and - in Loki's case - a very unintended de-aging. A cracky premise that turns real and sweet - and finally quite touching. A slightly rushed ending, I think, but lovely regardless.)

galaxysoup: "Can't Keep a Good Man Down" (Avengers. Phil, Nick, Clint, Natasha, Tony, Steve, Bruce. "In which Phil Coulson finds death to be less well-organized than he had expected." Okay, so...Phil's dead - a ghost, to be precise - but he hasn't actually gone anywhere because he's got things to do! Very funny and sometimes touching.)

galaxysoup (galaxysoup on LJ): "Darkness, Flooded in Light" (Avengers/Thor. Loki, OCs, Asgardians. "Loki falls. Injured and unable to access his magic, he must struggle to restore himself physically and mentally before the Bifrost is repaired and Asgard comes to find him. That would be difficult enough, but one of Asgard’s deepest secrets has followed him..." Loki-centric AU and very sympathetic to his traumatic post-Thor fall from the Bifrost, but in no way unfair to Thor himself (there are some very touching flashbacks to their shared childhood on Asgard) or the rest of the Avengers, regardless of Loki's estrangement from his brother. Good world building and original characters (just this side of 'too good to be true,' but just what's needed in this sort of hurt/comfort story. Potentially spoilery content information: Issues throughout the story include mental illness/dissociative identity disorder, homophobia (although only from some characters; most are perfectly fine with LGBT folks), and a rather horrible - possibly triggery - scene involving children in chapter 16)

galaxysoup (galaxysoup on LJ): "Freefall", followed by "Landing" (Avengers/Thor. Loki, Thor, Various Avengers and Thor-film characters. The author's summary for "Freefall" is "Loki falls. Thor catches him. This does not solve as many problems as Thor thought it would." and...yes, exactly. Not an apologia, but definitely a sympathetic portrayal of what Loki - post-Thor - might be going through. Potentially spoilery content information: depression and thoughts of suicide)

ghostdude101 (ghostdude101 on LJ): "The Spaces Between Staying and Walking Away" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Tony, Bruce. "The few times Bruce tries to leave, and the ways that Tony manages to get him to stay." Perfectly in voice and excellent characterization, especially for Bruce.)

ghostdude101 (ghostdude101 on LJ): "Money, Happiness and All That Jazz" (Avengers/Iron Man/Hulk. Bruce, Tony. "In which Tony buys Bruce things, Bruce is confused, and neither of them is very good at talking." Post-Avengers. Simple and honest...and very touching.)

ghostrunner (ghostrunner on DW): "I Trust You to Kill Me" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Most people find Specialist Barton so annoying as to be impossible to work with. He's been bounced off so many black ops teams it's probably a record. / Agent Coulson is made of sterner stuff." In which Phil and Clint don't and don't and don't...and then they do. So good.)

GilesFarnaby: "In Like a Lion" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. "There are some side effects. Not all of them are bad." Post movie and...the things that belong to Phil are no longer a perfect fit. Especially Clint.)

goseaward (goseaward on LJ): "R&R" (Avengers/Iron Man/Hulk. Bruce & Tony. "Bruce plans to spend his vacation at Stark Tower quietly, finishing up some projects he hasn't had time to work on in years. And maybe blowing up some things with lasers." In which Tony is the best science camp director ever, and Bruce is...happy.)

gqgqqt (gqgqqt on tumblr): "Disclosures" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Loki. "Phil Coulson is miserable, distrusted by most of SHIELD, and still doesn't remember why. / It's only going to get worse before it gets better." Full disclosure: through no fault of the author, it took me a while to become fully immersed in this story, but once it had a hold on me, the mystery surrounding Phil Coulson's strained relationship with Hawkeye was incredibly engaging. Note: due to the nature of this story, the author has provided a very specific outline that includes potential triggers here on tumblr. Do check it out if you think you might have any concerns. However, it is very spoilery, so if you don't want to be spoiler, caveat lector) Note: as of June 2013, this story is unavailable online

gqgqqt (gqgqqt on tumblr): "Margins" (Avengers. Phil/Clint...eventually. "Phil doesn’t know what, exactly, but something is wrong. / Clint shows up two hours late to work instead of the usual half-hour, and when he walks into the briefing room, he settles silently in his chair and sits perfectly still." so...this is less a romance and more a pre-relationship story in which Phil teaches himself how to tend to Clint, who's dealing with - in the words of the author - "an acute case of the bad kind of sub-drop." A relatively simple fic, but moving.) Note: as of June 2013, this story is unavailable online

gqgqqt (gqgqqt on tumblr): the "No Straight Lines" series (Avengers. Clint/Phil "Clint and Phil are a happy accident; happy, in that they're comfortable and safe together, and an accident, in that everything had to go horribly wrong to get them there in the first place." Three medium length established relationship stories featuring negotiated kink, followed by a much longer "how they got there" story set within a pre-Avengers timeframe. A slow, slow build toward the relationship - and the sex scenes lean slightly more to the 'psychologically satisfying' than the 'hot' side of the fence from my pov - but that works extremely well for this kind of tale. Here's the thing: all but the final story was written pre-Avengers and honestly, it's unlikely that both Clint and Phil are 'really' quite so damaged and fucked up as they are in this series, but they could be, i.e., there's nothing in canon to completely contradict these possible and sympathtic portrayals - and nothing at all about how messed up the two men are that gets in the way of their competence and general badassery. Potentially spoilery content information: PTSD, discussions of torture, possibly triggery non-con 'scenes' - even though they're negotiated to within an inch of their lives, general violence. )Note: as of June 2013, this story is unavailable online

grydo2life: "As The World Turns" (Avengers. Phil & Pepper, Pepper/Tony, Phil/Clint. "“So, how’s the cellist?” Pepper asks." An unusual take on the "cellist," on what Phil and Pepper shared, and what came after. Short and...sweet, plus a perfectly believable Tony)

gwynhefar: "I Would Tear Apart the World (Just to Get to You) " (Phil/Clint. "Agent Coulson has been missing for two months when SHIELD calls off the search." A great - and appropriate - backstory for Clint, who needless to say, doesn't agree with SHIELD calling off the search. Very engaging.)

gwynhefar: the "Quiet of the Fall" series (Avengers. Clint/Phil. A three part series that begins with a summary that says "Waking up hadn’t been part of the plan," we're guided through the aftermath - and the 'fix' - of Phil's arc from the movie. A smart look at both Phil and Clint's povs - both of whom believe they've lost their partner - and an all-too-believable look at what might have been Nick Fury's machinations.)

gyzym (gyzym on LJ): "we were emergencies" (Avengers. Natasha/Clint. "It's not about being unmade; it's about remaking, one aching step at a time." Whether you think this is your pairing or not, I cannot recommend this story highly enough. It follows the events of the movie - most specifically, Loki's manipulations - and...it's raw and honest and erotic and painful and loving all at once. Important: the author has included some fairly extensive notes - trigger warnings and otherwise - so do heed them if warnings are relevant to your reading experience)

haipollai: "buried" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. "All he has is a voice in his ear. It draws him away from the gnawing panic in his gut and the pain in his leg. His arm is pinned under his body and he can't move. The panic flares again but the voice continues and the words finally make sense, triggers some half forgotten training and he makes himself breathe, fighting through everything until the words in his ear make sense." Honestly? The author's summary is almost as long as the story, but this is just a nice little piece about being talked through a crisis." Warnings for claustrophobia, if that's triggery for you.)

haipollai: "let's save our lives from the coming tide " (Avengers. Clint/natasha, Clint/Natasha/Phil. "The first time Phil meets Clint Barton, he’s in handcuffs. He looks exhausted, there are bags under his eyes and he slumps in the hard metal chair. “The FBI wants you hung out to dry.” Phil drops the file on the table in between them. Clint looks at the file and then slowly tilts his head up to look at him. / “You look like FBI.” / Phil smiles dryly. “My organization prefers to hide in plain sight. Looking like the FBI serves that purpose.” Barton snorts, it might even be a laugh. / “And what organization is that?” / “Classified.”" A nicely paced and smart coming-together story for this trio.)

Hakaisha: "One Tin Soldier" (Avengers. Steve, Team, Bucky/Natasha, Clint/Natasha. "The five times the Avengers accepted Steve as their leader, and the one time they followed without question." An honest and very real character study of Steve Rogers. Plus...pretty perfect characterizations for the whole team. )

hannahrhen: the "Ice and Dust and Light" series (Avengers. Tony/Loki. "Loki and Tony Stark negotiate a relationship after an accidental pregnancy." Yes, mpreg - or maybe in Loki's case it's not exactly mpreg. Loki is just what you'd expect - kind of an ass, although not always a particularly murderous kind - but his relationship with Tony - and especially with his kids is pretty perfect.)

hannasus: "Two Truths and a Lie" (Avengers. Clint/Natasha. "Clint and Natasha remember Budapest very differently." Pre-canon, mission-based, and completely believable characterizations, with really smart insights into both Clint and Natasha's psyches.)

heartequals (savvygambols): "You'll Know How Good You Are " (Avengers/Thor. Darcy-centric Gen, Team. "Darcy’s got a summer internship with Agent Coulson at SHIELD." Total wish fulfillment - because...if you were Darcy, everyone would think you were great too, right? - but charming and fun. Coulson's the best boss!)

hegemony: "Matryoshka" (Avengers. Bruce/Natasha. " She finds space inside herself for him. / Alternatively titled, And Clint's Like 'Just Fuck Already!'" Great characterizations, perfect pacing, and extremely erotic.)

hetrez (hetrez on LJ): "Average Avengers Local Chapter 7 of New York City" (Avengers. Steve/Tony, Various Avengers, and Scabby the Rat. "Steve and Tony accidentally start a national do-gooders association and fall in love." Steve at his earnest best and Tony trying his damnedest to avoid turning entirely to the good side of the Force. Plus, funny - including one moment toward the end where I actually laughed out loud for far too long.)

hetrez (hetrez on LJ): The Make Way For Ducklings series. (Avengers/Captain America. Steve, Team, eventually Steve/Bucky. Starting with "Imprint" - a gen story in which "Steve builds a training program, a team, and new life for himself." the series movies forward into the future post-movie. It's technically incomplete, but each part stands alone and the second section, in which the Winter Soldier is found, is particularly wonderful.)

heyjudesie (heyjudesie on tumblr): "The potential you'll be (that you'll never see)" (Avengers. Tony/Loki. "Loki has an army, and so much malice in his heart. Tony has liquor, and Loki bent over his bar. They both have the lies that they tell, themselves and everyone else." Short and (not) sweet - but hot. There's no need for the Trickster to tell any lies to Tony here, when he's so good at lying to himself.)

hils (hils_k on tumblr): "While Phil Was Sleeping" (Avengers. Steve, possible Phil/Clint background, others. "Steve is present while Phil is unconscious " Post-movie. Gentle and lovely.)

hipsterchrist: "A Real Human Being (And a Real Hero) " (Avengers. Phil/Clint, others. "Phil is still Philip when he gets his first Captain America comic book. (Or, a lifelong character study fic of Agent Phil Coulson.)" A great backstory for Phil and a believable relationship between him and Clint. Potentially spoilery content information: You know how in canon, Phil apparently dies? Well he does here too - and stays dead. That'll teach me not to read warnings.)

hollimichele (holli on LJ/DW): "the hip and the dead" (Avengers/Captain America. Steve, the Team, Darcy, Others. "When she asks about the other tenants in the building, the realtor just throws up his hands and says, "Look, I don't know. They're artsy types, if they live around here. You know. Hipsters."" Steve moves back to Brooklyn and starts to settle in, but...maybe things have changed? Starts out gentle, but it's also a little sad and touching and hopeful, all at once. I was actually pretty surprised by the emotions that were drawn out of me.)

hollimichele (holli on LJ/DW): "Protocol 1985" (Avengers/Captain America. Natasha, Clint, Tony, Peggy Carter, Howard Stark, others. "“Holy crow, it worked," someone says." A time travel story, with a nod to "Back to the Future" and a perfect one at that. Smart, thoughtful, and a lot of fun. Potentially spoilery content information: Steve/Peggy happy ending, so there. *g*)

hollimichele (holli on LJ/DW): "Run to Ground" (Avengers/Captain America. Natasha, Steve, Bucky Barnes, others. "They bought-- what? A body in cryo?" Maria Hill looks skeptical. “How’d one guy fresh out of the ice kill a whole room?" Intel suggests the Winter Soldier is back, and Natasha sets off to take him down. Or bring him in. Steve Rogers ends up being a more useful mission partner than she could have imagined.Potentially spoilery content information: Leads to Natasha/Bucky/Steve.)

hoosierbitch (hoosierbitch on LJ/DW): "assume a defensive stance" (Avengers/Hulk. Bruce/Clint, others. " No one can understand why Bruce and Clint are together. Clint's loud, brash, irritating--exactly what Bruce doesn't need in his life. (Also, there are sandwiches. Of LOVE.)" The whole story feels poised on the perfect tipping point between sweet&funny and heartachingly poignant. A completely unexpected pairing for me, but I liked it very much.)

hoosierbitch (hoosierbitch on LJ): "As It Is Written" (Avengers. Clint Barton, Phil Coulson. "The first time the teachers send a note home with Clint, about his problems, about how he’s dumber than the other kids, his dad’s not angry. He just laughs, which, Clint realizes, isn’t actually better." Backstory - gen for the time being - about Clint, which imagines him grappling with dyslexia. Saved from moving into "Afterschool Special" territory by being incredibly honest and real. As of this rec, the author is planning to turn this into a series, but the story stands on its own.)

House_of_Ares: "A Christmas Story" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Phil is Jewish." So...I don't celebrate Christmas, but I still love Christmas fic, except every now and again I yearn for a story that doesn't default to Christmas - and this one is both smart and utterly believable.)

icarus_chained (icarus_chained on LJ/DW): Still Here (Avengers/Iron Man. Tony, Rhodey. "Just a tiny Tony & Rhodey moment, in the aftermath of Avengers." As the summary says. No more than a ficlet, but it feels very real and true to their relationship.)

ignipes (ignipes on LJ): "The Last Great Border Town Hotel" (Avengers. Natasha/Clint, although this is really Natasha’s story. “Natasha has a lot of weapons in her arsenal. Trust hasn't always been one of them. Perfect voices - including Phil’s - and a perfect backstory. I’m fairly certain that this has now become my head canon for Natasha’s recent years.)

ignipes (ignipes on LJ): "To Be Modified As Necessary" (James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers, Jane Foster/Thor, Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov, James "Bucky" Barnes/Natasha Romanov " They only need ten rules to ensure (relatively) peaceful cohabitation." A series of negotiations that make these people come together like a family. Sometimes funny and sometimes painful - in the best possible way - and always engaging.)

infiniteeight (infiniteeight on LJ): "Cost Benefit Analysis" (Avengers. Clint-centric, with Clint/Phil, plus Thor, Team. "Clint's definition of an acceptable loss is a little different than the team's." Clint is taken at the end of a mission. Excellent Clint pov and Thor is particularly great.)

infiniteeight (infiniteeight on LJ / infiniteeight8 on tumblr): "Guarantee" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Fury. "What would SHIELD look like in a world where all the Agents we know and love are more than a few degrees darker? What would Nick Fury do to ensure loyalty? And how would Coulson and Barton meet?" Definitely an AU, but with just a little twist, these characters could absolutely be the ones we know. Potentially spoilery content information: Clint is aroused by killing...and that's perfectly fine with Coulson.)

irnan: "call every girl we ever met maria" (Avengers/Iron Man. Tony/Pepper, Tony & Rhodey, Team. ""You're telling me," Rhodey said, gleeful, "you're telling me that you've been shot, stabbed, sewn up, been riddled with shrapnel, had a magnet implanted in your chest, spent two years poisoning yourself with palladium, spent twenty years as a functioning alcoholic and had a vasectomy and you still managed to knock Pepper up?"" Neither Tony nor Pepper are the most obvious parent material, but babies rarely wait for their prospective parents to pass a test. Smart and engaging, and while there are sweet elements in this story, it's anything but saccharine.)

irnan (irnan on LJ): "don’t turn me home again" (Avengers/Captain America/Iron Man. Steve, Bucky, Natasha, Peggy, Gabe Jones, Tony. ""I need to know what's in Hartford, Captain," said Hill. Her tone was gentler than Steve was expecting. He didn't know whether he ought to be grateful for that or not. / "Family," he said. The word felt rusty and disused in his mouth, on his tongue, but it was there, and that was what counted./ (or: five times Steve Rogers went to Hartford, Connecticut, and the people he spent time with there.") As one commenter noted, there really isn't enough Howling Commandos fic. Here, though, is a woderful Steve - and others - visiting an old, old friend. Gentle, funny at times, and a little bittersweet)

irnan (irnan on LJ): "Scarring" (Avengers. Tony & Steve. " Steve doesn't scar. It's a serum thing: his skin heals perfect, every time. / This means he doesn't get callouses, either. Upon occasion, that can be... painful." Just a brief, gentle moment between two people who are becoming friends)

irnan (irnan on LJ): "spectrum" (Avengers/Iron Man/Captain America. Tony/Pepper, the Team, Various. " Tony sets out to learn to play with others. Pepper enables him. The Avengers spend a lot of time pretending they’re not grateful for the chance to play back." Really lovely, almost as if somebody decided to do a whole cable tv season of post-movie Avengers, scripted entirely to my fantasy-specifications for how everybody should come together, followed by an end-of-season Bucky-centric three-ep arc. Update: this story is now part of a series called 'interesting landings', and while "spectrum" is still my favorite, the others are worth reading too, particularly the second story, "Crown and Anchor")

irnan (irnan on LJ): "yet turning stay" (Avengers/Iron man. Pepper/Tony, Others. " "Tony - you're all I've got too, you know."" Despite the author summary, this is really wonderfully Pepper-centric. Tony, yes, but Pepper's life is about even more than just Tony, lovely though he is. Really smart and engaging.)

isawet: "flying (just far enough) from the sun" (Avengers/Captain America/Iron Man. Steve/Pepper/Tony. "After the events of the film, Steve follows Tony home instead of Bruce." A bit of an AU, but the dynamics feel very canonically right. Good pacing, lovely - and believable - slow build to the relationship, and while not an easy story, it is an immensely satisfying one.)

jai/lordessrenegade (lordessrenegade; soundslikej on LJ): "Not to Say the Things We Mean" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. " "It took me four years to trust Phil Coulson to have my back," Clint told the bot. To its credit, it just gave him Coulson's mildest smile and said, "I know how to wait."" Post-movie, with all that implies about Phil...and yet! Rather...emotionally draining, but ultimately happy.)

Jai/lordessrenegade (soundslikej on LJ): "The Walls and Roof of This House" (Avengers. Phil/Clint/Natasha - in all combinations. ""I don't lie to Barton." "He lies to you." "Not very well. Not as well as you do."" Perfect dynamics, professionally and otherwise - with one of the few believable Phil/Natasha interactions I've read.)

james: "Tumble Down." (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Phil Coulson has been Hawkeye's handler for awhile. They still surprise each other. " So nice to see a Phil who isn't perfect at everything...and a Clint whose skill set extends far beyond his marksmanship.)

Janissa11: "Trigger" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. ""Like ripping off a bandage," Phil says, and hopes Clint hears humor and warmth and not criticism. He's never been entirely sure what Clint hears. He's got peculiar filters." After four months, Phil is conscious again, recovered, and extremely angry that the team has been lied to about his fate. He's particularly upset that Clint wasn't told he was alive. I'm putting one spoiler under highlighting, because I think the story works best when you discover this particular plot point as you read, but feel free to take a look if you want to: Clint is a hoarder...very realistically - and painfully - rendered here. Note: my acceptance of this as a potentially believable version of Clint isn't universally shared, in which case...read this as original fic?) )

Jaune_Chat (jaune_chat on LJ): the "Being Human" series (Avengers/Iron Man. Jarvis, Tony/Pepper, the Team. “For reasons of his own, Loki gives Tony's AI, Jarvis, a human body. What Tony didn't expect was to find himself trying to teach humanity to someone he'd programmed with his entire life.” Jarvis, as you might expect, is great, but he’s not quite ready to be human. Good and believable interactions between Tony and his former AI - and in the latest story, very good interactions between Jarvis and others. Incomplete as a series, but each individual story provides some kind of closure.)

JeziBelle (dixiechicken on tumblr): "Candy Shop" (Avengers. Pepper & Natasha, with implied het. "Calling the Avengers Tower an "embarrassment of riches" is a shameful understatement." Just Pepper and Natasha as actual friends, hanging out and talking about sex. Sweet...which is appropriate, given the title *g*)

JeziBelle: "Safe and Sound" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. "See? Nothing to worry about. Clint's swath of destruction hadn’t had any impact on anyone he cared about at all, especially not his significant other who he hadn’t seen since his will was controlled by an otherworldly god of chaos and trickery." Just about the best way Clint could learn that Phil was "dead." )

jibrailis: "The Last Love Song of Anthony E. Stark" (Avengers/Captain America/Iron Man. Steve/Tony, Sif/Loki. “After contracting an Asgardian virus, Tony starts forgetting things. And people. And Steve." Painful and frightening at times, but not without [ultimately justified] hope. Very creative and insightful.)

jibrailis (jibrailis on LJ): "The Sky and Everything Beneath It" (Avengers/Captain America. Steve, the Team. " Steve goes on a road trip to clear his head, but the other Avengers won't leave him alone." A smart and gentle post-movie story about things lost and things found. I really loved Steve in this.)

kathierif_fic (kathierif_fic on LJ): "One hears clearly only with the heart " (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Tony, others. "Clint doesn’t need to hear the words to know what Steve is saying to him. / “What have you done?”" As in comics canon - although in a different way - Clint loses his hearing. His team is still his team.)

Kayim: "Contingency" (Avengers/Hulk. Bruce, Various Avengers. "There are clear signs that Bruce has finally started to trust the rest of the team. The team, however, aren't so keen on those signs." Gen - and very touching.)

kellifer_fic: "99 problems (and the dice ain't one)" (Avengers. Tony/Steve, Phil/Clint, Bruce/Darcy. "Tony's life is almost perfect. He lives in a converted warehouse full of friends (and one frenemy), has a job that leaves him plenty of time to think about other things and a regular Friday night campaign. If his best friend, Steve Rogers, hadn't moved away to New York and left him behind, then perfection would've been achieved." Everybody's so perfectly in character, despite being, you know...in totally different situations. Funny, touching, and smart. Also? Absolutely great art.)

kellifer_fic: ”Brand New Day” (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Natasha, Darcy, Tony, others. “Today is one thousand, six hundred and forty. Just get through it.” Phil and Clint are involved, then Clint disappears...for five years. He eventually resurfaces, but he’s not the same. 8,900 words, and about 8,000 of them are pretty heartbreaking, but well worth the heartbreak.)

kellifer_fic (kellifer_fic on LJ): "Frankie Says Relax" (Avengers. Darcy, Team, a bit of Darcy/Clint. " Where Darcy gets a day job." Darcy starts to work for each of the Avengers. And...this is one of those stories that I think of as "Darcy-centric Reader-Insert Wish Fulfillment," where we're Darcy, generally being awesome. *g* Much fun!)

Kellifer_fic: "I Take My Children Everywhere (But They Always Find Their Way Home)" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Team! ""Oh my god," Phil groans, smacking a hand over his face just as a tiny Tony Stark marches up to him and very determinedly and with great gusto, kicks him in the shin." There's...an incident, and both Tony and Steve are de-aged. Just totally adorable – except for the five percent of the time that it's a little scary)

kepteinen: "A Fire to be Kindled" (Avengers. Steve/Tony. " It makes perfect sense, of course. The serum gave Steve the perfect body, so why wouldn’t it also give him the perfect mind? In the quietness of his own mind, Tony can admit he’s a little stung Steve didn’t tell him, but he’s not really surprised. / (Or: the one where Steve is smarter than Tony, and neither of them deal well.)" A wonderful look at Steve and Tony figuring out how to mesh. Warning for...Flowers for Algernon allusion: so many "feels")

laceymcbain (laceymcbain on LJ): "Five Ill-Conceived Valentine's Day Schemes and One Perfectly Romantic Gesture " (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Team, Others. "Phil Coulson hates Valentine's Day at S.H.I.E.L.D. - until he doesn't." This could have been complete crack, but instead it's a cleverly conceived story with some insight and warmth. Okay, and occasional crack. *g*)

ladyflowdi: "They Don't Know Where We Come From" (Iron Man. Tony, Rhodey. "“Shrapnel,” Tony says, and alarms go off around his ears and he can’t breathe and the pain is going to eat him up from the head down. “In my heart. I made it. Not the shrapnel. ...Well. The shrapnel too.”" As the author suggests, this could - and probably should - be considered a missing scene from the Iron Man movie, taking place just before Tony returns to the U.S. Exactly what I've always imagined would have happened.)

Lady_Ganesh (lady_ganesh on LJ): "Soft Skills" (Avengers. Steve, Tony, Pepper, the Team. "The team tries to bring Steve Rogers into the 21st Century. It mostly works." I could read sweet, semi-domestic, Steve-centric team building gen like this all day. Seriously.)

lanyon: the "i've got your blood under my fingernails" series (Avengers. Clint/Phil. "In which Barton and Coulson gradually get a clue, get together and get stuck into life in SHIELD. Also known as The One With The Weapons-Grade Cock-Blocking." Just a really charming, multi-part coming together story, mostly sweet and funny, but some sections are superhero-violent - and have appropriate warnings attached - so caveat lector)

lasergirl: "Environmental Control" (Avengers. Phil/Clint "Phil works for Stark Industries (Medical), and has his life down to a fine science. But meeting a bike messenger named Clint shakes things up for him." An AU, obviously, with a Deaf Clint and a Phil dealing with pretty serious OCD, and I really wish the author had written more in this universe.)

Laura Kaye: "Clause 19" (Avengers/Hawkeye (comic). Kate Bishop, Clint, Natasha, Clint/Phil, etc. "It took a special kind of crazy to break into a superhero's apartment and make yourself a pot of his coffee, and a special kind of skill to avoid the various booby traps that said superhero had installed in his apartment after consultation with a technical genius and a super-spy. Kate kind of wished that she'd called Natasha after all." A really good fusion of the movie world with the comics world, and Kate Bishop has an excellent outsider pov.)

lavvyan: "Catch Your voice" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Natasha. "Clint keeps telling himself he's not obsessed with Coulson. From the way Natasha keeps laughing at him, she's not buying it either. But it's only a crush if you know what the other guy actually looks like, right?" One of the best of the "Clint hears Phil's voice long before they meet face to face" stories, even though it's incredibly heart-wrenching in places.)

lavvyan: "Love in the Three-Ninth Kingdom" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Natasha. "Clint and Coulson are in mutually unrequited love. Natasha has no patience for their drama. And if the world were a nicer place to live in, she wouldn't have to deal with it." As the summary says, with the most perfectly world-weary and exasperated 'matchmaker' in Natasha "Love is for Children" Romanova.)

Lenore (scribblinlenore on LJ): "Never Have I Ever" (Avengers. Steve/Natasha, Team. "Steve has a lot of never-evers. Natasha decides to help him mark a few off the list. " Sexy and adorable, both at the same time)

lettered: "Or Even Rearrange You" (Iron Man. Pepper/Tony. "Tony and Pepper negotiate the beginnings of a romantic relationship. With sex." Just as it says in the summary. Good voices...and Tony is perfectly - canonically - unable to stop talking.)

lettered (lettered on LJ): the 'Responsible Science' series ( Avengers/Hulk. Two really excellent stories so far, both with a bit of subtext, but mostly gen. The first is Bruce&Natasha: "Uninterested in being an Avenger, Bruce goes back into hiding. Once more Natasha is sent to recruit him, but she has an agenda of her own. They navigate being human. At least one of them sometimes fails." and the second is Bruce&Steve: "Steve goes to Uganda, ostensibly to fetch Bruce, who still doesn’t want to join the Avengers. Steve tries to figure out how to do the right thing; they both try to find their place in the world." Very smart and insightful...with more to come. Note: a third story, featuring Bruce and Pepper, among others is now posted and is definitely recommended)

lettered: "Relationship Risk Assessment and Research " (Pepper/Tony. "Pepper’s trying to run a company, maintain a relationship, and still have her own life. Tony’s just trying to be a good person. AKA the one in which Tony won’t shut up about Pepper’s vagina and Pepper has a backstory." According to the author, this is a sprawling PWP, but here's the thing: I don't like PWPs and I really liked this story! It's also pretty phenomenally dirty, but all in the service of characterization, plus it's romantic and smart and psychologically insightful. Potentially spoilery content information: dirty talk, a spreadsheet, a vibrator, anal play, an enema, rimming, a blow-job, snowballing, light bondage, light humiliation, felching, consent play/RACK)

lettered (lettered on LJ): "The Kids Weren't Alright" (Avengers, etc. Bruce, Tony, Natasha, Steve, Pepper, others. "Tony accidentally turns himself into a twelve-year-old using alien tech. Steve is stuck as bodyguard, Bruce is stuck trying to fix him, and Pepper is stuck trying to ward off a twelve-year old’s attempts at flirtation. And then things go from bad to worse." Part four of the Responsible Science series - see above - and while there are elements that make much more sense with knowledge of the first three highly recommended stories, this could work as a standalone. One of the things that's clear from reading this story is the extent to which the Avengers are damaged people, and how much better they're doing now that they're adults. When they revert to childhood...honestly, it's pretty painful to see. A very insightful story and a very smart one. Potentially spoilery content information: References to past child abuse, homophobia. )

lindmere (lindmere on LJ): "All that is now, all that is gone" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Bruce & Tony, Tony/Pepper, the Team. "When the Hulk seriously injures Tony during a mission, Tony must decide whether he can trust the Hulk again--or Bruce." The plotting is perfectly paced, the characterizations are spot on, and the psychological wars raging in both Tony's and Bruce's heads in the wake of their inadvertently near fatal interaction rings completely true. Very highly recommended, especially if you care about stories that deal with the nature of trust and friendship, particularly the trust and friendship of these two men)

LinguisticJubilee: "Something Fishy" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "The one where Coulson gets turned into an octopus." This should absolutely not work as a story, but it does. I'd love to read a SEA-quel to this someday.)

LJC (taraljc on LJ): "Simple, not Easy" (Avengers - 2012/Thor. Clint Barton/Darcy Lewis, Loki/Sif, Phil Coulson/Natasha Romanov, Darcy Lewis & Loki. "Darcy should have seen it coming. She couldn't hang around the spandex crowd forever and not end up with a great big target painted on her back eventually. She was just surprised it took Loki so long. " Written before the release of the Avengers film and very much Jossed - literally - but funny and bantery and hot and team-buildy, with an eventual inexplicable epic bromance between Darcy and Loki.)

lyra_wing (lyra_wing on LJ): "bedrock and brick" (Avengers/Iron Man/etc. Tony, Team, some Tony/Steve. "" Tony does some renovations and then...it's moving in month at the Avengers university dorms, sort of - except this is not an AU. Really charming team 'stuff,' and the relationship building up - or springing into existence - between Tony and Steve is just right and incredibly lovely. Also, very hot.)

M (see this page. samdonne on LJ): "The Kids Aren't All Right" by Christine Everhart (Iron Man. Gen, with a variety of undercurrents. A wonderfully conceived and executed biographical piece in the style of a Vanity Fair article. Highly recommended!)

makokitten (makokitten on LJ/tumblr): "Misdeamors" (Avengers/Thor/Iron Man. Tony/Pepper, Loki/Tony, Tony/Pepper/Loki. " Tony and Pepper's night in is disrupted by an unexpected guest--well, prisoner--but they manage to make the most of it." Sexy and entertaining.)

marchingjaybird: "Tumblr Crushes" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Phil uses the Internet as stress relief. So naturally, it turns on him and introduces romance into his life." Believable? Oh, hell no. *g* But charming and sweet. )

MarieLikesToDraw and Sidney Sussex: "Old Man Shoes and Scientist Heart" (Avengers. Bruce-centric Team Fic. "“There is love in me the likes of which you've never seen. There is rage in me the likes of which should never escape. If I am not satisfied in the one, I will indulge the other.” -Mary Shelley, Frankenstein" A really excellent character study of Bruce, with good relationship dynamics between him and everybody, including the rarely mentioned Jasper Sitwell. Note: there's a great piece of accompanying art embedded at the top of the story, which you must see.)

MaySoFarAway (circusbones on tumblr): "Someone You've Yet To Meet" (Thor/X-Men crossover. Darcy/Wolverine. "Agent Lewis does a favor for an old friend, and goes up to the frozen North to try and talk sense into a man who's made a painful mistake." An unexpected pairing that works amazingly well. Engaging and smart, with good voices for both Darcy and Logan.)

megster" "Still Great" (Avengers. Darcy, Tony, various others. "Darcy has always known it could happen eventually. / Trouble is, she never stopped to consider that it actually would. / This is Darcy, and this is death, and this is not supposed to happen." Let's get the Death warning out there right away. And yes, it is very sad. I mean it. Darcy pov and...catharsis.)

melannen: "If They Ever Put A Bullet Through Your Brain (I'll Complain) " (Avengers. Bruce/Betty, Tony/Pepper, Tony/Bruce, Bruce/Betty/Tony/Science. "Bruce Banner doesn't dare stay in one place very long, especially Manhattan. If he'd really wanted to get lost, though, he probably shouldn't have let Tony Stark give him a new phone. It's hard to be lost and alone when Tony keeps telling people to call you." A really cleverly wrought epistolary tale, with just the right touches of humor and a Bruce characterization that couldn't be more believable.)

mercaque "Worse Without" (Avengers. Tony/Bruce. "Too familiar with loss, Tony can't resist an invincible creature like Bruce. But even Bruce can be hurt." Sweet and Angsty...but with an entirely hopeful ending.)

mia kulpah (nina_monk): "Catch and Release" (Bruce & Natasha. "Bruce is frustrated and angry. It takes a Black Widow and copious amounts of bad vodka to find out why." The background relationship interest may be Bruce/Tony, but the foreground relationship is all this weird, honest, kind of drunken friendship between an angry Bruce and a really insightful Natasha.)

micketysplit: "(three words) and goodnight, indeed " (Avengers. Phil/Clint "Phil is in recovery from Loki's attack and is on the REALLY good drugs." So, yes, Phil's a bit...forthcoming when he's too drugged up to realize Clint's really in the room with him. Also...he's pretty sweet.)

micketysplit: "Alula [Vertical and Forward Force] " (Avengers. Phil/Clint "Because Loki is a contrary asshole, he gifts Clint Barton with wings, of all things, during battle. The wings in and of themselves are one thing, but the way they react to Phil is another." I'm not usually a wingfic fan, but in this case, I absolutely am. I love when stories that should, by all rights, be crackfic end up being anything but.)

Mikey (mikes_grrl): "Rescued" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Team, various pets. "Clint has a cat, and then he has Phil's corgis. Nothing seems to go right, until it does. " A Coulson 'fix-it' set after the movie, and...okay, nobody's turned into a corgi, but there are corgis aplenty in this sweet, kind of 'guilty pleasure' fic. )

Milli: the 'Not Defeated' series (Avengers. Loki-centric. Mostly gen, but leading up to elements of Loki/Tony. "After the movie, the Chitauri come for Loki." Dark and...do heed the content information/warnings. The series [complete through three stories so far] appears to have been written quite quickly, and it still needs some proofreading work. Despite that, on a psychological and emotional level, the story works extremely well. Potentially spoilery content information: imprisonment, psychological torture, non-con/rape, humiliation, PTSD. Yes, this is basically the kind of story I never read...and yet.)

Misachan: "Contingencies" (Avengers. Clint, Natasha, Selvig, Team, etc. "Clint knows it's only a matter of time before it happens again." Psychological fall out from Loki's actions for Clint. All kind of...horrible. Natasha and Phil are great. Potentially spoilery content information: PTSD, suicidal ideation.)

misachan: "Indescretions" (Avengers. Clint/Phil/Natasha. "Section 15.03 of every SHIELD agent's manual of rules and regulations outlines the official policy on fraternization, specifically the kind between handlers and field agents under their authority – in short, don't. Clint, Coulson and Natasha have been dancing all over that particular rule for years now, trusting that the combination of caution and exemplary job performance would quiet any whispers. / They're wrong. Clint and Natasha find themselves sitting through a series of interrogations as they try to thwart an investigation that's supposedly for their own good - and if lying and putting on a good show aren't enough, well, then they're just going to have to get a little more proactive." Set post IM2, and great behind-the-scenes. )

missbecky "this is what peace feels like" (Avengers. Gen Tony, Pepper. "The best thing about being you is also the worst thing about being you. You put on the armor and you soar through the sky and the world falls away so there's only the mission and all that is good, it's very good. But at the end of the day, no matter how much you resist it, you still have to land again./ The armor has to come off." Insightful, with a hint of Tony/Pepper to come.)

Morgane (smilla840): "The Evolution of Clint Barton" (Avengers. Clint-centric, Clint/Phil, Natasha, Fury. "Clint is 17 the first time he meets Fury. This is what happens after." The author's notes say that the working summary for this story was “Clint’s gay, Phil is straight and Natasha doesn’t sleep with anyone – somehow it works” and...yes, although this is much more than a simple relationship story. Very nicely done, with a rather emotionally stressful section during Avengers canon, but...a happy ending! Do pay attention to the author's warnings though.)

msraven: "Junction" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "A year and a half after the Chitauri attack, Phil returns to his hometown, only to find Clint already there." A canonical story that feels like the best kind of AU, with a great sense of place.)

mumblemutter (aka, a & cm / mumblemutter on LJ/DW): "Life outside that will persist in entering" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Bruce/Tony/Pepper. "Pepper and Tony and Bruce get domestic." As it says on the label [summary]. Bruce is tentative, as one might expect, but Tony and Pepper are very welcoming.)

musesfool (musesfool on LJ/DW): "what a smile means" (Avengers/Captain America. Steve/Natasha. "Natasha knows a lot of things Steve doesn't." Perfectly voiced, especially Steve, who's charming and chivalrous and every bit a man of his era while still treating Natasha as an equal)

myrmidryad: "Just Another Guy With A Bow" (Avengers. Clint, Natasha, Phil, Team, some Clint/Natasha and Clint/Phil. "Clint's life is a steady progression from point A to point B, but it's everything that happens between those points that make the story interesting. Things like joining the circus, losing Barney, finding Barney, stumbling into SHIELD, trusting Coulson, meeting Fury, making a different call when he's sent to kill the Black Widow, and becoming part of the dysfunctional Avengers team." Excellent backstory, detailed and engaging, with some actually exciting action sequences (I say this as somebody who usually prefers endless scenes of characters sharing their feelings while sitting on the couch to action *g* Potentially spoilery content information: A lot of this story involves Clint and Natasha's grief over Phil's assumed death, which is very sad even if you have a sense it won't be...permanent.)

Neery: "Trust" (Avengers. Bruce/Clint. " The Council wants the Hulk monitored 24/7. Fury can't tell them to go fuck themselves, but he can assign the one man the Council trusts even less than Bruce Banner./ Clint's not thrilled to get stuck on babysitting duty, and Bruce would be glad to get rid of his guard, but for now, they're both determined to make the best of a bad situation. Somehow, two guys who didn't expect to have much in common end up learning to trust each other." This isn't really about just two guys who learn to trust each other, because the Other Guy factors into the equation too. And...honestly, I realize this isn't the most obvious of pairings, but in this story it works so well.)

neveralarch (nevralarch on LJ): "Travelogue" (Avengers/Hulk. Clint/Bruce/Natasha, in various combinations. " Post-New York, Clint's still having trouble dealing with the whole Loki-controlling-his-brain situation, and Natasha seems to be avoiding him. Bruce Banner, meanwhile, just wants to get back to Kolkata." Engaging and intriguing, with some excellent insights about the parallels among all three characters and how they deal with their guilts and fears. The development of the various strands of their relationships reads as completely possible and in character.)

NezumiPi (NezumiPi on ff.net): "The Avengers Time Bomb Initiative" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, eventually, Team. " The Avengers are now a team (sort of), but they're still lost creatures." Post-movie, and excellent team building. Potentially spoilery content information: Steve is surprised by the casual acceptance of same sex relationships initially and some of his comments - well meaning from his perspective, are pretty homophobic. He learns better.)

nightwalker (nightwalker on LJ): "New Traditions" (Avengers. Tony, Steve, Various Avengers, Others. "Tony's starting to think that tackling the whole teamwork thing, the sobriety thing and the holidays thing all at once might have been overly ambitious. AKA: Steve and Tony throw the first Annual Avengers Non-Denominational Winter Holiday Party." For somebody who doesn't drink or do drugs, I'm weirdly attracted to stories about addictions - and also to stories about characters trying to deal with those addictions, whether alone or with the help of [new] friends. This story, written for a holiday fest prompt, is...sweet, but not saccharine and feels very honest. Plus, there's an eight legged horse!)

noelia_g (noelia_g on LJ): "If at first you don't succeed (it could be a conspiracy)" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. ""Coulson gets released from medical on Monday, and on Wednesday Clint is ready to fucking murder his new teammates." In which Clint wants a quiet moment to confess his feelings and Avengers are fucking cockblockers." Funny, sweet, and Clint has a great inner voice.)

noelia_g (noelia_g on LJ): "We've got to find other ways" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. ""The first mission being a cakewalk and a few states away is actually a good thing. At least that’s what Clint thinks until he’s at the designated meet-up point and it’s Coulson behind the wheel."" As the author says: "Post movie, fix-it, road trip." Phil is still recovering, Clint's feeling massive guilt, and the two men are alone together in a car on a mission. Nicely voiced and very believable.)

Not_You: "An Eyeless Face" (Avengers. Clint-centric, Clint/Phil. "Clint is called Hawkeye, and that's truer than most people know. You see, Clint is special. He has a whole collection of eyes for every occasion..." The summary is not a metaphor. Strange and erotic and very original.)

Not_You "Mr. Coulson's Technicolor Dreamhouse" (Avengers. Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, Natasha Romanov/Maria Hill, James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers, Thor/Jane Foster, Bruce Banner/Pepper Potts/Tony Stark. "Phil is Mr. Coulson, beloved children's entertainer and purveyor of quality television for humans. Clint is the new cameraman, and this is the tale of their love. And of Steve and Bucky's, and other people's as they appear. Coulson is afraid he's too boring and Clint that he's not classy enough. They are both wrong." One of those "nothing-like-canon" AUs that still work wonderfully. Great relationship dynamics.)

ObsidianJade (ObsidianJade on ff.net): "Answer" (Avengers. Clint-centric, Phil, Tony, others. "Clint isn't just good at what he does. He's good at what he is." A character study and a relatively dark one, at that. Insightful.)

often_adamanta (often_adamanta on LJ): "slipping through the years" (Captain America/Iron Man. Ghost!Steve, Tony - then Steve/Tony. "The plane crash and subsequent ice might have killed him, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t still around, haunting those he cares about. And since the only person who can see him is Tony Stark, death sure isn’t going to be boring." Cleverly conceived and executed, with a really excellent Steve-as-a-ghost. Note: Ghost!Steve encounters Tony for the first time when he's just a baby, which is an issue if you have concerns about relationships that have their roots in massive age differences. It’s important to notte, though, that absolutely nothing happens between the two of them until Tony is an adult)

oldseafarer: "Normal" (Avengers. Clint/Darcy. "Clint loved her for her smile. Perhaps it was a cliché thing for which to love her, but this was a story told a hundred times and originality was inconsequential. Or, how Clint fell in love with Darcy and promptly screwed it up." Darcy takes care of all the Avengers; she and Clint take care of each other. Occasional OOC exposition, but sweet and insightful.)

onthewaters: "Slow and Soft" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "When Coulson adds Barton to his team, he expects smartassery. Except there isn't any..." Plotty, smart, and perfectly paced. pre-Avengers.)

Pandelion: ”Searching (For Something Somebody Stole)” (Avengers. Phil/Clint, The Team. ““This is a dream,” Clint says slowly, eying the man seated on his couch. / “Yes,” the man says. “This is a dream. Just like the last one and the one before that and the one before that and on and on.” He waves a hand, as if that’s not very important. “Sit down; I’ve got a lot to say, not much time to say it and I will not kiss it better if you fall on your ass in the middle of it.” / Still a bit wary, Clint perches on the edge of an armchair. /“ To start, my name is Phil Coulson, agent of SHIELD.”” A really cleverly done post-movie fic [so...spoilers for the movie!], with more than a hint of magic realism.)

paperclipbitch (paperclipbitch on LJ / giveyourlovelovegiveitallaway on tumblr): "although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight" (Avengers/Hulk. Natasha/Bruce...just about, Fury, others. " “You shouldn’t google yourself,” Natasha tells Bruce." Wonderful characterizations for both Natasha and Bruce...very real. This isn't one of those easy 'happy ever after' kind of stories, but there's a pretty wonderful gentleness to it, all the more surprising because of who - or rather what - these two characters can be some of the time.)

paperclipbitch (paperclipbitch on LJ / giveyourlovelovegiveitallaway on tumblr): "I've Suffered Shipwrecks" (Avengers, etc. Clint/Loki eventually, plus everybody including Peggy Carter. "Most people, when they break up, sort through their record collections, possibly chuck each other’s clothes onto the sidewalk, engage in soul-destroying coffee dates where they try to sort through the emotional debris, and then leave each other the fuck alone. / Clint and Natasha were never very good at acting like normal people, though, which is why they run a cafe together." A ridiculously entertaining, hipster mash-up, non-superhero AU that Friends could only wish it had been - and weirdly insightful to boot.)
Perpetual Motion (perpet_fic on LJ): "But I Will Hold On Hope (And I Won't Let You Choke) " (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "In which Clint is not the emotionally stunted one, plays pretty well with others, and Sitwell is a foul-mouthed matchmaker against his will." Neither Phil nor Clint conform exactly to typical fanon cliches here, but they feel exactly right as they navigate the waters between wanting and saying something. Plus, there are great OCs and interesting missions and Clint is an actual grown up, which is great to see.)

Perpetual Motion (perpet_fic on LJ): "By the Book" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Coulson figures it out through standard procedure (rumor mill to threatening junior agents to that required weird conversation with one’s boss)." Phil is honest and great...and, as a side note, he has an excellent relationship with Nick Fury.)

perpetfic: "There's a Dog-Related Pun in There Somewhere (Don't Worry; Tony's On It) " (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Phil gets turned into a corgi. There are emotions involving Clint. That's literally the entire plot." Yes, yes...I'm reccing a story in which Phil's turned into a dog, but seriously, he's the best dog, Clint's the best dog minder, and Jasper Sitwell is made of friendship and dickishness *g*)

Petra (petra on Dreamwidth): "Zen and the Art of Anger Maintenance" (Avengers/Iron Man/Hulk. Bruce/Pepper/Tony. "Bruce doesn't trust himself as far as an unenhanced human could throw him, but his new employers, or rather teammates, or--possibly--friends want to help him work on that." This isn't Pepper and Tony's first time around the block, but it's new for Bruce. Smart, with relationship negotiations that feel natural - and if there's not exactly a happily ever after here, that's perfectly okay, at least for the time being)

PlotDotOh (TheCheerfulPornographer): the "Valhalla Blues" series (Avengers. Phil, Peggy Carter, various Aesir, Phil/Clint, Peggy/Steve. The whole series could probably be summed up by the summary of the main story, i.e., "Death is not the end." In the main story, Phil is dead, ends up in Valhalla, and that's really just the beginning of everything. There are prequels and sequels to the main fic - and one side story - but the focus is what happens in Valhalla. And here's the thing: Phil's definitely in "hyper-competent" mode in this story, a fairly easy match even for Gods - just this side of being a purely fanon creation - and yet within the context of the story, it feels absolutely right, i.e., not contrived at all. I love Phil and his relationship with Peggy most of all, but there's great interactions with the Valkyries and with Loki and with Clint, of course. Not the most common conception of Valhalla, but a very clever and believable one.)

pollyrepeat (pollyrepeat on LJ): "Be Calm, Look Cute" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, eventually, but gennish, Team. "“It's a contingency plan in case of accidental teenagering,” says Stark." Phil is de-aged by a villain, then Clint is. Somehow they still get to be badasses. A cracky premise, but a lovely story, heart-clenchingly so at times.)

pollyrepeat: "fall upon, light upon" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "In which Clint rejoins SHIELD, has a series of agency-sanctioned adventures, and despairs of ever getting Phil to notice him romantically. He might have known Phil better before he knew so much about him." Sequel to the already-recced "still officially lost", i.e., an excellent origin story for Clint. This story has Clint and Phil learning to be a great team, Tasha joining S.H.I.E.L.D., and much UST.)

pollyrepeat (pollyrepeat on LJ): "10, 9, 8, car" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Team. "Clint was pretty sure he'd seen this movie. Like a lot of things since he'd joined the Avengers, it had been a lot funnier when it wasn't his life." Avengers meets Groundhog Day - with a twist. Clever, engaging, and manages to be original, despite the number of G.D. variants there have already been in many fandoms.)

pollyrepeat (pollyrepeat on LJ): "still officially lost" (Avengers. Clint & Phil, others. "“Barton has clearly imprinted on you,” Fury starts, and keeps talking right over Phil’s knee-jerk, horrified, “He has not,” to seal Phil’s doom by saying, “so I’ve decided that you’re going to take primary responsibility for him from now on.” / “Oh, god," Phil says, faintly, before he can stop himself. How Clint comes to the attention of SHIELD...and of Phil. This is Gen, with a very young, very surly - and very believable - Clint. Excellent.)

pollyrepeat (pollyrepeat on LJ) and jonesandashes: "well, let the drum beat drop" (Avengers. Tony pov, plus everybody. "Pepper leaves, and there’s no more pizza, and Thor’s already talked about Jane, and Tony suspects all of them realize, abruptly and simultaneously, that they actually have no idea what to do now. He is, in fact, pretty certain that they’re just a few minutes away from someone deciding to say something about the weather. It’s probably going to be him." Excellent team building...with food. Just the sort of family vibe that I love.)

porthos: "(First Impressions Are) A Work in Progress" (Avengers. Steve/Tony, the Team. "Tony has a point system for the times he can get Steve to be less than perfect." Occasionally verging on too OTT where Tony is concerned, but it rings true on an emotional level and is often very touching.)

potboy (potboy on LJ): "A Kindness Repaid" (Avengers/Captain America/Thor. Steve, Loki, Others. "Written for a norsekink prompt: Loki is abused in the Avengers' custody, Steve is horrified and tries to comfort him. As a result the two become friends. (Though when Loki is involved nothing is quite that simple.)" In which Steve changes just as much as Loki does, and yet from a certain perspective, neither really changes at all. Some surprisingly touching moments, and some extremely interesting perspectives, especially where Asgardian family dynamics are concerned, but don’t ignore the potentially spoilery content information, especially if you’re at all invested in Thor: casual acceptance of rape as a tool of control/punishment on the part of the Asgardians which could be triggery for some readers, although the narrative itself clearly doesn't present it as being in any way acceptable. Sadly, it's not really unbelievable; it's unlikely, but not impossible that even Thor could behave that way, especially when viewed from a Viking/historical perspective.)

qwanderer: "Hulk Knows" (Avengers. Hulk, Bruce, Tony. "Hulk watches through Banner's eyes, when he can, when Banner isn't pushing him down, blocking him out." The Avengers movie from the Hulk's pov. A very rare perspective. *g*)

raiining "All Fall Down" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Natasha. " Clint has a history of making poor decisions. He thought he'd gotten better at that. It turns out, not so much. / Or: the one where Phil is supposed to seduce a target and Clint accidentally gets there first." Good voices and a believably possessive Phil. Dub Con, but not between Phil and Clint.)

raiining: "Baby Steps" (Avengers/Marvel (comics). Clint, Phil, Kate, Clint/Phil. "Clint Barton doesn't care for S.H.I.E.L.D. This Agent Coulson, though, he might be different." This is the Clint of the 616!comics-verse or maybe the Hawkeye-verse developing a relationship professionally and otherwise - with Agent Phil Coulson. The setting, as I've indicated, seems to be an amalgamation of a number of versions of the Marvel world, but it all works seamlessly. And yes, this is the regularly beaten-up version of Clint - as per comics canon, I'd like to note - but he's still independent and adorable. )

Ralkana "Good SHIELD Agents Never Die " (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Phil/Work. "They just go back to work." Satisfyingly happy-making early story in the wake of the "coulsonlives" news, with excellent character details. )

redfiona (redfiona99 on LJ): "Walking in These shoes" (Iron Man. Pepper/Tony. "Pepper Potts is the woman she'd always wanted to be. It's probably not all Tony's fault that her well-ordered life has just been blown to pieces. But it's definitely mostly his fault." Written for the lgbt fest on LJ, this Pepper was, as a child, a boy named Scott Potts. When Tony indicates an interest in changing the nature of their relationship from boss/employee to...something else, Pepper has to decide whether - and if so, when - to tell Tony about her past. Really nicely done. Very honest and real.)

regimes_fall: "The Loneliest of the Lone Wolves" (Avengers. Clint/Natasha. "A brief standalone between Natasha and Clint outside of Stark Tower just after Loki's capture. Both of them could probably use a hug, though they settle matters in a very Clint/Natasha way instead." Perfect reactions from Natasha and Clint in the wake of the battle with the Chitauri - slightly stoic and not terribly emotional - but very intimate, despite all that. Nicely done!)

restlesslikeme: "if this isn't the kingdom then i don't know what is " (Avengers. Phil/Clint. Instead of the summary, here's the author's note: "[a] love letter to siken's poetry, to boys with bloody knuckles and agents with lonely routines." Agent Coulson brings a young Clint into S.H.I.E.L.D. and then waits. Smart and engaging.)

RetardedCookie (r_cookie on tumblr): "Lokasenna" (Avengers/Iron Man/Thor. Loki/Tony, Natasha/Pepper, Thor/Jane, Others. "Some mornings, Tony wakes up and he cannot believe Loki’s right there / And then he remembers, grudgingly, that he has, maybe, on some stupid level, those sons of bitches to thank for the way things turned out." Post-movie, but an AU of sorts, merged with variations on the Norse myths, including Loki being father to Fenrir, the great wolf. So, yes...Loki and the Avengers are antagonists, but then he goes missing and can be found nowhere, until finally Queen Frigga asks for help in retrieving her son. If you want your Loki suffering, you'll find that in abundance, but note that this is not a story for people who don't believe in some sort of redemption/happiness for Loki. Very engaging and smart. Potentially spoilery content information: PTSD, threats to children, torture - with roots in Norse mythology)

rileys: "faster in our veins" (Phil/Nick" [1539573] C clear on all mh evals. Affect is normal, mood is greatly improved. C reports positive feelings about recovery and general outlook. That was the last report, sent three days before the emergency call from the safehouse, and the half-hour Quinjet trip in the middle of the night." Post-movie, and both Phil and Nick are showing signs of strain. Potentially spoilery content information: PTSD and suicidal ideation. Not happily ever after, but not a tragedy either.)

riko (riko on LJ): "Off the Record (Off the Map)" (Iron Man. Tony, Pepper. "Pepper has already walked many miles in Tony Stark's shoes." Post Iron Man 1, so takes nothing later into account, and really, this is just some simple relationship dynamics wrapped up in a simple story about Tony's car breaking down temporarily in the midwest. Four years after being written, the voices still sound spot on though.)

rivalmagician: "Second Time Around" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Phil Coulson and Clint Barton both died before their time. Ten years later Philip and Clint become best friends without a clue of who they used to be. They're just two pre-teen Avenger fanboys who find themselves on SHIELD's radar." An AU, obviously...and Phil and Clint are just perfectly drawn kids here. Note: the sequel, which is still in progress, is introducing more Marvel characters, including a number of Young Avengers.)

rubygirl29: "I Would Take Your Poison With My Kiss" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Natasha. "The bar is in a questionable neighborhood, but Clint doesn't scare easily and he doesn't feel any threat. He just wants to drink and forget that he's got feelings for his handler that are innapropriate at best and positively embarrassing at the worst." An engaging story, and - considering what happens plot-wise - quite touching.)

sabinelagrande: "Black Market Baby" (Avengers. AU. Tony/Pepper. "Tony's money buys him way more than he bargained for." The first part of what is now a series by the same name, this is a story in which Tony and Pepper meet because Pepper is a sex worker, which...shouldn't work? But it absolutely does.)

sabinelagrande: "Electric Wool" (Clint/Phil. "Coulson's replacement leaves a lot to be desired, in ways Clint can't even imagine." Let me just spoil things right now and say that androids feature strongly in this story. So do emotions.)

sabinelagrande: "Love by Gaslight " (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Clint can't seem to keep anything straight in his mind." The warning I will give is that this story contains what is in effect spoilers for the new run of Secret Avengers - and also that it's pretty creepy. For the rest, see the author notes at the end of the story. From one perspective, this is a happily ever after story. But that's just one perspective. )

sabinelagrande (sabinetzin on DW): "Tell Me About Phil" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Team. "Phil hasn't gone missing. Phil is gone. Clint is going after him." Post-movie, so spoilers for...that event. However, this isn't a simple "fix-it." Cleverly conceived and not at all what you might expect. Potentially spoilery content information: Appearances from non-Avengers Marvel characters. Drug use. Mental health issues. )

Salazarfalcon (haicrescendo on LJ): "Truthfully" (Thor/Avengers. Loki-centric gen, Thor-and-Team, OCs. "Loki had every intention of wreaking havoc upon Midgard the moment his suicide attempt had failed, it was just too bad that Midgard ended up being so distracting. Who knew that such a primitive society would have such a novel concept as therapy?" Started long before the Avengers movie came out, this story is far more sympathetic to Loki's situation than post-movie fic tends to be, and...that's fine with me. I have a none-too-secret love for 'redeemed Loki' stories, especially if they involve therapy [because really, who needs therapy more than Loki?], and this story works wonderfully well on that level. Plus..the therapist - an OC - is lovely.)

samalander (_samalander on LJ/notasamalander on tumblr): "The Law of Conservation of Pants" (Avengers/Thor. Darcy-centric, Team, future Darcy/Clint. " Or, Five Things Darcy Lewis Thought She Knew Before She Met the Avengers (And One Thing That Will Always Be True)/ In which Darcy is put in charge of Social Media relations for the Avengers and finds that 5/6th of them challenge the things she thought she believed." In a lot of ways, this is more the prologue to a story than a complete story, but it can absolutely stand alone and...okay, you know how Darcy Lewis is so often the stand-in for "Us?" Well, this Darcy was even more me - or some long ago, post-college version of me - than all the other Darcy versions I've read. So I had to rec her. Um. The story. *g*)

saone: "Blut Plate Special" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Bucky/Natasha, Steve/Tony. "Take one ex-circus performer, one homicide detective, a dash of meddling cohorts, a heavy helping of pie recipes, mix well, and bake until somebody gets a date." Diner AU, and very nicely done!)

sarcastic_fina (sarcasticfina on tumblr): "Lean Over The Edge Now, Darling, Stare Into Abyss (Jump, And I'll Catch You, I Promise) " (Avengerus/Thor. Clint/Darcy, Team, OFC. ""Tell me about Darcy..." the doctor prompted. || Clint is ordered to see a psychologist after a traumatic event causes SHIELD to indefinitely bench him, but he's falling apart faster than anybody could possibly help put him back together." Let me say first that this story is really well done and even has some really sweet moments. Next, let me say that decades of reading "fix-its" in one fandom or another left me woefully unprepared for, well, okay, seriously...heed the warnings --> Potentially spoilery content information: Major Character Death, i.e., Darcy. PTSD. Suicidal ideation. This was extremely sad, and it was totally my fault because I default to reading no warnings and expecting miraculous back-from-the-dead endings, which...I didn't get. Still, I'm reccing this.)

scifigrl47 (scifigrl47 on LJ): "The Act of Creation Will Be Your Salvation" (Avengers/Iron man. Tony & Bots, Tony/Steve eventually, Pepper, Phil, Team, Everybody. "When Tony Stark was seventeen years old, he built his first AI. On that day, he ceased to be his father's creation, and became a creating force in his own right. / That one act likely saved his life, and not always in the most obvious ways." I think you need to know Avengers and Iron Man canon for some of the most important moments - especially in the first third of the story - to really resonate, and honestly, I like this story enough to say that if you haven't seen the two Iron Man movies, you should go do that before starting to read, just to let the story work as well as it possibly can. Really well done, and...you wouldn't imagine that a story half-narrated by AIs and robots would be able to pack such a powerful emotional punch, but it does. Potentially spoilery content information: Flashbacks to torture and deaths and loss, thoughts of suicide)

scifigrl47: "Bedtime Stories and Nightmares" (Avengers. Steve/Tony, but really Tony and Steve and Dummy. " Tony Stark was comfortable with his life. And why shouldn't he be? He's brilliant, rich, powerful, a super hero. He's got a team he trusts, a job he enjoys, his work and his creations, and he's sleeping with Captain America. Tony's life is just fine, thank you very much. He knew that it would change, life always changes, but he wasn't in any way prepared for how it was about to change. / Tony never intended to be a parent, and even if he had, he could never have anticipated this particular change." Magic or science, it barely matters, because the upshot is that where Dummy used to be is now a child. Insightful and touching. Note, this is part of the still in-progress excellent "Tales of the Bots" series. )

scifigrl47 (scifigrl47 on LJ): the "In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury)" series (Avengers/Iron Man/Captain America. Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson - although the vibe is more Team-centric Gen than anything else for the first two stories. Technically, the series is incomplete, but each individual story is finished, starting with "Some Things Shouldn't Be a Chore": Steve takes things like personal responsibility and respect seriously. Tony's got people he pays to take care of that kind of thing, and anyway, he's pretty sure that he's going to die of some exotic disease in his workshop, because Dummy's still a little spotty about what is 'clean' enough to put on an open wound. The rest of the Avengers are in this for personal gain, except for Clint, he just enjoys being a dick." More banter than anything else for stories one and two, but funny and sweet and sometimes very touching - and then turning plotty and romantic in story three, i.e., "Four (or Five) Reasons For Kidnapping Tony Stark" which is, now, my favorite of them all and can probably be read as a standalone story.)

scifigrl47 (scifigrl47 on LJ) : "Phil Coulson's case Files of the Toasterverse" (Avengers. Steve/Tony and Clint/Phil, but the pairings aren’t really the focus of most of the stories. "Tony builds unfortunate AIs, Clint is a snarky little bastard, Coulson is the only person who is sane..." A less linear, but no less engaging companion series to "In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury)." Same universe, same dynamics, and as with the other series, still technically incomplete, but the individual stories do stand alone perfectly well. A bit of old school ‘speechifying’ but some of the funniest moments I’ve ever read in fanfic. Like... crying with laughter funny.)

screamlet (screamlet on LJ): "Brain, Tongue, and Heart" (Avengers. Tony/Bruce/Pepper - eventually, Steve, Natasha, Clint, Thor, Everybody. "After the failed debut of Loki as supreme ruler of all humans, the Avengers left on Earth piece themselves together using JARVIS, The Sound of Music, science, war games, and anything else they can find." I'd say this is 'team building,' but it's not an easy post-movie fix where everybody moves into Stark Tower and they're all instantly 'besties.' What it is though is a really smart and engaging story, sometimes/often funny and sometimes wistful and sometimes sweet - and always good.)

second_skin: "Philophilia" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Natasha. "Phil and Clint go to the beach. It's basically a hostage situation. " Set pre-Avengers movie. Phil takes a chance and sees if he can change his and Clint's relationships, and Clint is - believably - anxious.)

Selenay: Dreams and circus Crowds" (Phil/Clint. "Phil Coulson never joined SHIELD. Clint Barton never left the circus. They're destined to meet anyway." A circus-centric AU. 27K)

Selenay: "Kissing Under the Mistletoe (and Other Christmassy Activities) " (Avengers Phil/Clint. "Phil stared. "You're actually volunteering to spend Christmas pretending to be-" /"Your boyfriend." Clint nodded. "I've had worse assignments." / "Fine." Phil pulled up a website and began hunting for flights. "Remember, you volunteered for this."" an oldie, but a goodie where tropes are concerned...and one which works perfectly here.)

Selenay: "A Light Into My Darkness " (Avengers. Natasha/Darcy. " Natasha Romanov didn't think she had a type and if she did, Darcy Lewis was as far from that type as possible. / She might be wrong." Now this is a rare pairing - and honestly, it probably shouldn't work, but it actually does here.)

Selenay: "Safe House Love" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. " "Don't you ever want more? How long have we been doing this - three years?" / Three years, four months and five days, not that Clint was counting." Occasional sex isn't the problem; it's admitting how much more they want than that which is too frightening to attempt. Yeah, I got a bit teary-eyed.)

Selenay: "Vampires In Manhattan " (Avengers. Phil/Clint. " Transported to another dimension, Clint and Phil find themselves quarantined in the middle of a vampire plague. Meeting their duplicates and seeing how everything went wrong could be the push they need to confront their own feelings. / But with time running out, they need to find a way home and, if they're lucky, a way to fix the other world as well." Dystopian, scary, but not entirely without hope - and very smart. Note: now with a companion story serving as a sequel.)

shadowen: "Chrysopoeia" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Everything comes with a price." Heart-wrenching and honest and ultimately hopeful. Warning: references to and descriptions of a suicide attempt.)

shadowen: "Fifty Pound Draw" (Avengers. Phil/Clint eventually. "There was always a chance the mission would go wrong." Set pre-movie, early in Clint's time with SHIELD. I love stories in which character and relationship dynamics show up embedded within the plot instead of being weirdly estranged from the plot points, and this story does that exceptionally well. It shows who these two men are - and what they feel for each other, even at an early stage in their relationship - by what they do. Nicely done. Potentially spoilery content information: guns, knives, broken bones...that sort of thing, plus a creepy sequence where Phil is forced to swallow some of his own flesh.)

sheafrotherdon (sheafrotherdon on LJ): the "Pigeonville, USA" series (Avengers. Phil, Darcy, Steve, Pepper, Tony, Phil/Clint, Steve/Tony. Two stories in a technically incomplete series, but both stories definitely stand on their own. The summary for the first is "Day 214 on the campaign trail of Steve Rogers for President. Twenty-sixteen's turning out to be a hell of a year" and the summary for the second is "Tony has ideas about his role after the inauguration" - and despite being written pre-movie, both stories are funny, intelligently observed regarding the Marvel universe and U.S. politics and are perfectly voiced.)

shell (umbo on LJ): "The Gift of Idunn" (Clint/Phil. ""This is a great boon," Thor said reverently as he picked up the sphere, which remained a dull silver color. "It is for the restoration of what is lost, for the righting of wrongs. It was a gift from the goddess Idunn."" An AU which merges two Avengers universes: the one we know from canon and one in which Phil's fate is arguably even worse than the one we saw. Smart and original.)

shell (umbo on LJ): the "Long Range Reconnaissance" series (Avengers/Captain America. Steve/Bucky. Phil/Clint, Tony/Pepper, Team. Originally, I had recced the first story in this series - "The Same, but More" - which is a Steve/Bucky story set in the second world war. Now, though, I'm reccing the whole long - albeit still technically incomplete - series, mostly set in the present and focusing on both the fallout from the Chitauri attack and the not-quite-casualities as well as the return of Bucky Barnes, aka, the Winter Soldier. Since this rec is being made well before the release of the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it should be noted that the later installments of the series draw on events from Brubaker's comics run instead, and the whole series is very smart and often very moving.)

shellybelle: "if you let me through the door we can let the world in" (Avengers. Tony, Team + Phil. "Tony Stark has always wanted a clubhouse. He gets something more than that. (Or: Tony is a big softie, Natasha doesn’t like to share, and Thor just likes it when everyone gets along.)" Post-movie. A really nicely done "everyone moves into Stark Tower" story.)

shellybelle: "Mr. & Mrs. Barton (Or: Why Natasha Sends Jennifer Aniston an Annual Apologetic Fruit Basket" (Avengers. Clint/Natasha. "Five years before they meet as Hawkeye and the Black Widow, they meet as Clint and Natasha. There is a romance, a marriage, and then, predictably, everything goes absolutely to hell, and Clint still thinks they should be getting royalty money from the DVD sales of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. (Or: boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. Boy and girl get married. Boy and girl neglect to do background checks.)" The relationship develops at the absolute perfect pace, and it's all so well done that you can allow yourself to forget that neither Natasha's nor Clint's employers would really let their operatives get involved in a serious longterm relationship without running a background check on the partners, no...not even Phil. Meanwhile, though, I never saw the film that that served as a basis for this story, so I can't speak to the comparisons, but it's sweet and violent and loving and sad and erotic all at once, and it worked for me on all those levels)

SidheRa: "Universal Constants" (Avengers. Clint/Natasha. "After New York, after the gods are gone and the heroes have returned to wherever they came from, Clint and Natasha go to ground." Clint and Natasha, taking care of each other in unexpected ways. Very beautiful.)

Sidney Sussex (sidneysussex on LJ): "Asenion" (Avengers. Phil, Clint...maybe Phil/Clint. For the summary, the author uses Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, which...there are actually quite a lot of "Phil is a robot" stories in this fandom, but this is the first "Hawkeye is a robot" story I've encountered so far. Very AU'ish, as you’d expect, but it still feels like Phil and Clint.)

Sidney Sussex: "Drop the needle again (and I dance with your ghost) " (Avengers. Sitwell, Blake, Clint. "Sitwell lets Blake call him ‘Coulson’ three times before he snaps." Even S.H.I.E.L.D. agents need time to grieve...in their own way.)

Sidney Sussex (sidneysussex on LJ): "So they could wake up in the future place" (Avengers. Phil-centric, future Phil/Clint. "In which Phil Coulson takes Extremis, and "affordable loss" is not a phrase that should ever be applied to Clint Barton." As the summary says - and very well done. For background information about 'Extremis' from the Marvel universe, click here)

Sidney Sussex (sidneysussex on LJ): "softly and suddenly vanish away" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "There are more things they don't have words for than things they do, but they may be in need of a redefinition of some terms. Ones like dead, and alive, and okay." The story begins like this: "Operational mission failure" The words don't sound particularly frightening, but...yeah, they are - and for any other information, you can read the spoilers. although I'd suggest you let the story unfold naturally instead. Seriously. Potentially spoilery content information: You ignored my advice, eh? Okay, so...Clint and Phil are in a relationship. Phil dies during a mission. Technically. His consciousness - and some semblance of his physical self - continue on thanks to experimental nanotechnology. )

Signe (oxoniensis on LJ): "Tex-Mex, Lies and Facebook " (Avengers. Pretty much everybody. " Darcy's not exactly sure how she came to get an invite, but Jane said party so Darcy was all over it. And then Jane texted her the address, and Darcy nearly peed herself. She's at a party at Avengers Mansion, which is like, the coolest, most exclusive place in New York. Probably in the entire world. Tony Stark said hi to her when she arrived, and what is her life that she knows Tony fucking Stark, and he knows her name?! / "This is totally going on Facebook!"" A series of post-movie vignettes and just right.)

Silverflame (morganoconner): "My Soul for a Wish" (Avengers. Clint, Phil. "Clint meets Agent Coulson for the first time." Short and hopeful...this is the first time Phil and Clint are meeting face to face, but not the first time they've spoken.)

sinope (eponis on LJ): "Conviction" (Avengers. Phil/Clint...mostly...eventually. " Coulson gets reborn as a kid named PJ, Hawkeye's biggest fan. Now all he has to do is convince Clint to give him a shot. History repeats itself, but it takes time." Creative and clever and very moving.)

Sinope: "K-I-S-S-I-N-G" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "It all starts with a baby in a baby carriage. / Phil and Clint go about everything backwards, but at least they end up in the right place." Charming and...realistic, for certain fanfic-specific values of "realistic" *g*)

sinope (eponis on LJ / sinope on DW): "Leaving Doubt to Fate" (Avengers. Hawkeye (Clint Barton)/Phil Coulson. "Clint doesn't have a functioning arm. Phil doesn't have a functioning body. They make it work." Even more science fiction-ish than canon, with a really good possible insight into Hawkeye's psyche - and a smart perspective on the way he might see himself within the team...and otherwise. Potentially spoilery content information: Dom/sub play, and...is it still a spoiler to say that Phil - as per the Avengers movie - is dead?)

Sinope (eponis on LJ): "Perfect" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Natasha. "In which Loki left Clint with an extra gift, and everything is perfect, right up until it isn't." Really great take on the "just gay for you" trope (which...if I didn't know it could actually be true in the "real world," would have weirded me out even more the first time I encountered it in fanfic.) Utterly believable reactions from both of them and just about the happiest - most "perfect?" - ending a scenario like this would ever allow. Potentially spoilery content information: As the author notes say: Magical alteration of sexual orientation, followed by an otherwise-consensual sexual relationship with a gender that wasn't previously arousing.)

Sinope (eponis on LJ): the 'Salted Caramels' series (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Team, Others. The series is technically incomplete, but each story stands alone, and each is really well done, especially - as of this rec - "If you do it right, it is sublime" and "Something More" so far. Particularly good pov from Phil, and not only where Clint is concerned.)

Sinope: "Twentieth Time's the Charm" (Avengers. Clint/Tony, Tony/Bruce, Clint/Phil. " Clint and Tony get laid, have fun, and eventually fall in love, but not necessarily with each other. / Or, the one where everyone assumes that Clint and Tony are dating just because they're fucking, and Clint doesn't understand why." Pity sex and companionate sex and...just a lot of sex, which may or may not "count" - whatever that means - but a lot of love too, of one sort or another.)

sinuous_curve (on LJ and saystheheart on DW): "Come On Up To The House" (Avengers. Phil Coulson/Nick Fury. "Their door looks like every other door on their floor; silver numbers that’ve needed a good polish for the better part of a decade and and matching handle and lock. When Phil slides his key in, the zero in the middle of 407 retracts and a retinal scan pushes out. He lines his right eye up to the green light and ten seconds later hears the cheerful boop that means he’s him and welcome to come inside. " A rare glimpse at the domestic life of two people who you'd imagine would have no domestic life)

Siria (siria on DW): "fighting fire with firewood" (Avengers. Natasha, Natasha/Clint, Team. "Natasha was not the kind of person to be curious." Great Natasha voice, as she figures out who she is, who she could be - and how Clint fits. Very smart story.)

sirona (sirona_fics on DW): "A Matter of Proportions" (Avengers. Clint/Phil. "Clint somehow finds himself fascinated by Phil Coulson's sartorial choices. He refuses to admit that he's kind of maybe been thinking about it a little too much." The story moves seamlessly from observations of clothing to UST to sheer hotness.)

Sirona: "i am ready, i am fine" (Avengers Clint/Phil/Natasha, in various combinations. "Post-Avengers OT3 Fix-it fic." Just a vignette, set at the moment of Phil waking. Gentle and touching.)

Sister_Wolf (sister_wolf on DW) and carleton97: "Gift of Asylum." (Avengers/Captain America/Thor. Clint/Darcy. "The story of how Darcy Lewis accidentally helps found the Avengers while having an epic, failboaty romance with that dude she nailed in a bar two years ago. Tasers, jackbooted thugs, Tony Stark, and life-altering job offers are par for the course when you help discover an alien/god dude with amazing pecs." Written before the Avengers movie was released, so AU for film canon, but steamy and cool and Natasha has the best advice for her ex about how not being a creepy stalker is a good thing. Note: the saga continues in the post-Movie Asylum 'verse, with two extra stories as of this update!)

skiesovergideon/Reg (skiesovergideon on tumblr): "Family Ties" (Avengers/Thor. Loki, Various OCs, Thor, Various Avengers. "After his fall from the Bifrost, Loki finds himself taken in by a suburban family and lacking most of his magic. He resolves to escape them as soon as possible. This does not go the way he planned." Epic Loki-centric gen, pre-dating the Avengers movie. A good read of one end of the Loki psychological spectrum. Good world-building, and if imperfectly paced at times, still very engaging and smart.)

slynn (slynn on ff.net / slynn6776 on LJ): "The Exchange" (Avengers. Clint, Phil, Team, Pepper. "Clint has his own system that allows him to get new reading material without actually having to keep any of it. Mostly, it works. Until it doesn't. " Before and after the movie. Heartbreaking and life-affirming and only tangentially about books.)

snottygrrl (snottygrrl on LJ/DW): "my arrow flies straight and true (and I've been loved inside a heart for years) " (Avengers. Clint, Phil, Clint/Phil, Team. "Phil Coulson wakes up in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s medical bay. Clint's sure it's his fault. The rest of the Avengers just want to help." Dual pov, post-movie 'fix it' which both Phil and Clint doing an excellent job of avoidance. Nicely done!)

snowdarkred (snowdarkred on LJ): "you’re a rich little boy (who’s had to work for his toys) " (Avengers/Iron Man/Captain America. Tony/Pepper, Tony/Pepper/Steve. "Your name is Tony fucking Stark, and this is how it goes: Start, stop, start again. Rinse. Repeat." Tony-centric and very insightful. Written pre-Avengers, but works with current canon, and...difficult to read at times, this being Tony Stark after all, but ultimately hopeful/happy. Potentially spoilery content information: Tony suffers a permanent injury in the course of the story)

snack_size (snack_size on LJ): "Another Reason to Keep You" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Tony/Bruce. " “I know that he - the Other Guy, he helped us. He saved me. You saved the world.” Bruce tossed some toast and eggs onto a plate and handed them to Tony, then put some on his own. “You should take the rest of the eggs, too,” Tony said. “It looks like it’s been weeks since you’ve eaten.” / “I ate yesterday.” / “Before then,” Tony said, and Bruce poured himself more tea before sitting down, ignoring the eggs. “You need...better. Deserve it.” He said this while he scooped scrambled eggs into his mouth, and Bruce had to think that it was on purpose. /“You make it a habit of picking up strays?” Bruce asked, leaning back to sip his tea and grimacing." Tony does a brilliant job of getting Bruce to hide in plain sight.)

somehowunbroken: "And So It Goes" (Clint/Phil, Natasha/Thor, Steve/Bucky/Tony. "The Avengers is a moderately successful band, well on its way to becoming a mainstream hit when guitarist Bruce Banner has to take a sudden leave of absence. Lead singer Clint Barton and the rest of the band have to find a replacement, and Clint thinks that the former guitarist/lead singer for Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes, is a sure thing. Nobody counted on Bucky knowing Steve, or the strain that might put on Steve's relationship with Tony..." I'm not in love with Natasha's portrayal, but generally speaking this is an engaging and entertaining AU.)

SomeoneElsesDream (canadiangoddess on LJ): ”When Your Heart Beats (Next To Mine)” (Avengers. Clint/Phil, the Team, Others. “Clint falls prey to an evil villain and is left transformed into a woman. He doesn't handle it as well as would be expected. The story where Clint is a woman, Phil is terrified, Tony is a laughing bastard, Bruce gets to be a geneticist, Natasha is (not so) surprisingly helpful, and Steve gives great hugs.” I’m always a little wary of reading genderswap stories, because so often they become either not-my-thing crack or are too misogynistic (intentionally or otherwise) for me to read. This is neither, just a smart story, with a Clint whose responses to this change in his life ring true and a really great Phil.)

some_stars (some_stars on LJ/DW): "Emergency Pants" (Avengers/Iron Man/Hulk. Tony/Bruce, Pepper/Tony implied...in a good way. " "Were you worried?" Tony says. "That's sweet. That is always so adorable when the big guy worries about me."" Basically a post-mission pwp, but sexy and really charming.)

so_shhy (so_shhy on LJ): Don't Mention Demi Moore" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Team, Others. "‘You’ll drown their roots, watering them that much,’ Phil says. / Given the circumstances, it’s not terribly surprising that Clint drops the coffee mug he’s been using to water the houseplants and jumps a foot backwards in sheer astonishment." Phil is dead...or is he. A really sweet, really nicely structured Ghost scenario)

spinstitcher "Kings and Vagabonds" (Avengers. Loki-centric Gen, many characters from Thor, etc - and Sleipnir! "n the wake of the Chitauri Loki is stripped of his powers and banished to Vanaheim. Nobody tasers him, but there is an awful lot of singing and dancing. Accompanied by his eldest son, who happens to be a horse, Loki slowly begins to carve out a place for himself – one that isn’t Supreme Ruler of the Known Universe / But there is another power emerging from the darkness; one that threatens the safety – and sanity – of all the Nine Realms. Loki may have given up his dreams of becoming Glorious Overlord, but that doesn’t mean someone else gets to take his place." A smart and insightful 'redemption fic' for Loki, post movie canon. There's a shippy sequel to this story that's currently in progress - and which is quite good - but I really love this one. )

spuffyduds (spuffyduds on DW): "Avengers Dissemble" (Avengers. The Team. "Everybody lies, everybody fronts." Post-movie, and...there's a lot they don't say, even to themselves.)

starandrea: "The First Annual Avengers Convention" (Avengers. Team, Darcy, OCs, Phil/Clint. "With damage estimates topping $100 billion, New York City faces a long and expensive road back. Charity organizations have stepped in to support the Red Cross and provide long-term relief, but the economy is struggling and money has to come from somewhere. Everyone wants a piece of the Avengers. Who better to help fundraise than the heroes themselves?" If you've ever been to a convention - especially Comic Con - you'll absolutely recognize this one. Great panels, great fun, and frequently insightful.)

starhawk2005 (starhawk2005 on LJ): "Playing Nursemaid" (Iron Man. Tony/Pepper. "Pepper’s tired of the holding pattern they’ve been in, ever since Tony came back from Afghanistan." set mostly between Iron Man and Iron Man 2, a very believable look at what it would take for Pepper to let the nature of her relationship with her boss change. Believable and honest.)

StarTrekFanWriter: ”Blue” (Avengers/Thor. Darcy/Loki, Thor, Steve, Tony, others. “Whenever Loki shows up it means that Darcy's life is in flux. That doesn't mean she's unhappy to see him.” Starts shortly after the Avengers movie, with Darcy - from Thor - assigned to watch over a magically-depleted Loki under what is, in effect, house arrest. The story of their developing relationship - let’s call it friendship, at least at the start - spans decades, during which Darcy ages and Loki...doesn’t. And then the story develops a plot! Very insightful and smart, with a Loki who seems to be a mixture of movie and comic canons. Note: I don’t know if that’s intentional on the part of the author, but the characterization works extremely well!)

stereobone (stereobone on tumblr): "Desiderata" (Avengers/Thor/Iron Man. Tony/Loki, Various Avengers. "Tony doesn't know anything about love. He's convinced himself it's for the best." In the grand tradition of "aliens made them do it," a spell is cast on Loki which makes him fall in love with with Tony Stark. Excellent characterizations...given the scenario. *g*)

storiesfortravellers (daria234 on LJ/dariaw on DW): "Private Bookmark?" (Avengers. Team + Coulson. "The Avengers discover that there are fans who write explicit RPF fic about them. / Some of them are very confused. Some are proud. Some don't understand why everyone writes the pairings who aren't together but hardly anyone writes the couple who actually is together. " Okay, so...I usually have zero interest in these sorts of "characters x and y discover fanfiction about themselves online" stories, but in this case, well...superheroes! There probably would be fanfiction about them. So I read it...and I have to say that my throat is in actual pain because I was laughing so hard. Really fantastic - and dare I say surprisingly in character?)

swamiface: The "Love is a Four Letter Word" series (Avengers. Clint/Natasha, then Clint/Phil. First this: "The story of Natasha Romanoff, post-meeting Clint Barton and his stupid cocky grin." and then this "The story of how Clint seduced his handler (and accidentally fell in love) and then brought in a dangerous underage assassin as a new recruit (and then fell in love again) and everything that happened after." The series isn't finished, but these two excellent stories definitely stand alone...and very well )

TamrynEradani: "Watch and Learn" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "When Clint is a boy he learns to keep out of sight, how to read situations, and how to put others before himself. When Clint is a young man, he gets shot by Agent Phil Coulson, and he learns to put those skills to use. / Clint's formative years, his work with Trickshot, and his long history with SHIELD. The Avengers will be a thing, but their coming together diverges from the movie canon." A really great look at Clint's journey - and not just as it relates to Phil, although god, the longing there is sometimes so painful - and some excellent team interactions. Smart and long)

Tawabids: "Ring around the Roses" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Tony/Pepper. "Tony Stark wants Agent Coulson to live in the tower with the rest of the team. But Coulson has responsibilities they don't know about: caring for his partner Clint Barton, an ex-SHIELD assassin irreparably damaged after a mission that went wrong several years earlier. / Tony wants to help. Coulson wants to keep everyone happy. Clint just wants a garden and for the Avengers to piss off and let him grow weed in peace." A very difficult AU, with an ending that's hopeful, but which is never going to be perfect.)

thebratqueen: "The Consultants" (Avengers/White Collar crossover. Tony/Bruce, Peter & Neal, Mozzie, El, Phil, others. ""Which of our cases was similar to Iron Man and the Hulk wanting us to commit fraud for them?" Peter asked. "Because I have to tell you I'm racking my brain and nothing's coming to mind."" A clever, often funny, seamless crossover between two seemingly dissimilar - albeit both NYC-centric - universes. Very good voices and characterization, although I have to admit, I'm so used to Phil Coulson having near Ninja-like talents in fic, that him being 'just a guy in a suit' was briefly traumatic. *g*)

TBQ/thebratqueen (thebratqueen on LJ): "Progress Underlaid by Shared Hopes" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Tony/Bruce, others. " On the one hand: irritated Hulk. But on the other if you were a being made up of rage maybe irritated was you having a good day." Part three of the Feelings Under Seriously Intense Observation and Negotiation" series. Tony has a talk with the Hulk, and Bruce isn't pleased. Good Hulk and Bruce voices in particular. Potentially spoilery content information: If you're a Pepper/Tony person, you should know that she's pushed aside a bit, but she and Tony are okay with it - and still friends - so the semi-obsessed shipper reader should be too? [I always want there to be a continuing Tony/Pepper relationship in fic, no matter who else gets added to the pairing, but that's my issue *g*])

TBQ/thebratqueen (thebratqueen on LJ): "A Reasonable Conclusion" (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Bruce/Tony. "Tony was fine. Talking to Tony about science was fine. It just felt a little bit strange to combine the two and ask to see the incredible scientific innovation that happened to reside inside of Tony’s chest." Arc Reactor foreplay ftw!)

teh_helenables (teh_helenables on LJ; helena_eternal is the author's non-writing LJ): "Tell me the story of how you ended up here" (Avengers/Thor/Captain America. Steve/Loki, but mostly friendship. "Five times Loki protects Steve from little things (like going crazy), and one time Steve saves Loki from the biggest threat of all." Loki is - inexplicably - an Avenger, and the narrative-appropriate unsolved mystery of this fact allows for a completely believable reason for Loki and Steve to be in each other's company. Smart and engaging and touching. Note: now there's also a lovely sequel: "They’re the ones that make it all worthwhile" - "Five things Loki received out of friendship, and one thing he received out of love..)

telm_393: "Red Angel" (Avengers. clint/Natasha "In the end, it really all boils down to one question. What does Natasha Romanoff want to be when she grows up?" A high school AU, which is really not the sort of thing I typically read or rec, but this is really well done. Both Clint and Natasha - whose pasts are dark and difficult, even if not in exactly the same ways as in canon - are independently taken in to be fostered by Phil. And that's where it starts...)

TerresDeBrume (terresdebrume on LJ): "We Shall Have Peace" (Avengers/Norse Mythology Generally. Steve-centric, Clint, Loki/Tony, others. "Loki succeeded in conquering the Earth. 85 years later Avenger, Steve Rogers is released from prison only to find that Earth has become a true utopia." Future!Fic obviously, and very creative and original. A bit more 'talky' than anything else, which is actually a feature of the majority of utopian tales ["...and now let me tell you about our economic system!"], but no less engaging for that.)

Teyke (teyke on ff.net): "And the Sky is Grey" (Avengers/Iron man/Captain America. Steve, Tony, Pepper, Others. "Steve hates the cold. Tony loves to mock him about this – or so Steve thinks. Clint remembers cold nights in Afghanistan and buys everybody else a clue." Slightly more "talk, not show" - almost meta, in a way, as the author notes confirm - but a really insightful and smart look at Tony's psychological make-up - and Steve’s, as well.)

thatdamneddame (thatdamneddame on LJ/tumblr): "Hope is Not a Course of Action" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, past Clint/Natasha. “Clint loved Natasha like he loved a lot of stupid ideas." Clint is introduced to SHIELD and then Clint is introduced to Phil Coulson. A really excellent origins story - if non superheroes get to have origins stories. Smartly written and utterly believable.)

thatdamneddame: That We Do Not Speak" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Natasha. "They tell him Phil’s dead but Clint's not so sure. He can still sometimes feel the Tesseract under his skin and knows, deep down, that death cannot stop Phil Coulson." It's not spoiler to say that the start of the story - post "death" - is, from Clint's pov, absolutely heartwrenching. Smart, emotionally insightful, and replete with clever and original magical theory.)

thehoyden: Took Me By Surprise and Then" (Avengers/X-Men. Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier, Avengers Team. "After the second surgery in New York, Charles doesn’t anticipate anyone keeping vigil by his bedside — and certainly not Tony Stark." An excellent blending of the two 'verses: the connections feel very organic. And the relationship between Erik and Charles feels sweet and feels canonical.)

theladyingrey42: "The Whole World Is Moving (And I'm Standing Still) " (Avengers. Phil/Clint, team. " Phil Coulson dreams of kissing Clint, and Phil Clarkson dreams he is Phil Coulson, and every time the dream recedes, he feels a little more ragged, a little more torn around the edges. / Phil Coulson's life is perfect and full and meaningful. Phil Coulson's life makes sense. / But the sun rises. The sun always rises, and Phil Coulson fades away beneath the light. Dissipates 'til he is smoke and ash on Phil Clarkson's tongue. / Phil Clarkson starts another day, and it is shivering with electric blue, and none of it makes sense. / And Clint Barton…Clint Barton just wants the man he loves back." An incredibly original take on the amnesia trope. Really excellent.)

thelma_lou (thelma_lou on LJ): "Reconciliation" (Iron Man. Tony/Pepper. "This is not the end-of-the-line scenario she’d always envisioned. This is not a drunken mistake or desperation or declining years or no one else left to fight." Oh, Pepper's so smart and insightful about Tony, but somehow she still ends up saying yes.)

theorytale (theorytale on LJ): the “Birds and the Bees” series (Avengers/Iron Man/Thor. Tony/Loki, Tony/Pepper. Starting from a prompt that says “Basically, Loki bursts into the avengers mansion and forces a potted plant into Tony's hands and says 'this is your child' and storms out.” this series - two stories as of this rec - would be crack except for the fact that NorseMyth!Loki gives birth to things much stranger than a mere potted plant. Loki, despite being in a sometime-relationship with Tony, remains in character, Tony does as well, and Pepper...yay, Pepper!)

theviolinist: "the war is over and we are beginning" (Hulk/Iron Man/Avengers. Tony/Pepper/Bruce. "I will provide for you shelter and wine / If you can prove that you are of my kind." Post-movie and concurrent with everybody's move into Stark Tower, Bruce finds himself...chosen. An interesting take on Bruce, in particular, especially as the relationship between the three of them becomes more established.)

the_wordbutler (the_wordbutler on DW): the "Motion Practice" series (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes (background), Thor Odinson/Jane Foster (background). A non-superpowered AU that begins with this main story: "When Clint Barton takes a job prosecuting traffic offenses and DUIs at the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, he's pretty sure his life is finally going in the right direction. But the problem isn't the direction: it's where he ends up." and...I have to admit, it took a couple attempts before I was able to easily immerse myself in this world, despite liking the author's work very much, but once I did, it was very rewarding. Make sure you read the side stories, particularly Not Calm, But Bright", a long 'meet the family' story that's part of Phil and Clint's tale. Note: a Bruce-centric sequel to "Motion Practice" - i.e., "Permanency" - is currently in progress.)

the_wordbutler: "There Can Be Only One (Except There Are Two)" (Hawkeye. Hawkeye (Kate), OC, Hawkeye (Clint), Lucky! " There are two Hawkeyes, but they are both named Hawkeye. / No, really. / It is not any more complicated than that. / (Or: Why Kate Bishop hates first dates.)" I so feel for Kate here, even if I'm kind of secretly laughing at her pain.)

the_wordbutler (the_wordbutler on DW): "With a Capital T and that Rhymes with C and that Stands for Agent Barton" (Avengers. Phil/Clint, presumably *g* " / The problem is, this isn't the kind of trouble he expected--or prepared for. " A deceptively simple short story, with so much going on beneath the surface.)

thingswithwings: "cup of kindness" (Avengers. Bruce/Pepper/Tony. "Tony, Bruce, and Pepper, at Tony's New Year's Eve party." Multiple Marvel continuities meet up in this charming party story, and Bruce...is actually happy.)

thingswithwings (thingswithwings on LJ/DW) " Stark, A.E., and Banner, R. Bruce. (2013). "Biodosimetric Tools for Measuring Induced Isomeric Transition in Inverted Paired States." International Journal of Radiation Biology 89.9, 43-85." (Avengers/Hulk/Iron Man. Tony/Bruce, Tony/Pepper. " "And so," Tony concludes triumphantly, "you owe it to science, to yourself, and to the people of New York City to have tons of hot awesome monster sex with me."" Basically, Tony and Bruce - with Pepper's amused and interested consent - find ways to have sex...of all types. Plus, Science Bros! Very smart and very hot. Potentially spoilery content information: A little sadism, a little masochism, a little polyamory - all consensual, and Tony is - as one might imagine given the summary - a bit of a size queen, because this is the Hulk he's mostly having sex with.)

thingswithwings (thingswithwings on LJ): "Five Ways to Get In Touch with Your Inner Mild-Mannered Scientist" (Avengers/Hulk. Bruce/everyone friendship, everyone/everyone sexy times. "sleep, smash, sparring, science, sex." Four entirely believable - and charming - Bruce/Hulk-centric friendship sections and then one entirely unbelievable - but no less hot for all that - team bed romp.)

thingswithwings (thingswithwings on DW): "you think you're the center of the universe" (Avengers/Iron Man/Hulk) Bruce/Tony/Pepper. "Tony likes to push his limits. Pepper and Bruce like to help." I'm usually not a pwp gal, but in this case, I'm making an exception. Sexy...and it made me laugh - although not at the same time *g* Very nicely done.)

topaz (topaz119 on LJ): "doesn't matter if I bleed" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, Natasha, Team. "Clint's never pretended to be deep. He's just the guy who sits back and watches, the guy who makes the shot when he needs to. He's seen a lot of crap in his time, sat through a lot of fucked-up scenes to get to where he needs to be, but this, now--he can't stand another second of it." Wonderfully written and quite beautiful. The psychological aftershocks from Loki's mind control of Clint and then Phil's 'death' by Loki on the helicarrier are perfectly rendered here. Nothing's easy, but...that's okay. And worth it.)

torakowalski: "Learn How To Tell You Goodbye " (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Bucky/Steve, Tony/Pepper, brief Clint/Steve. "When Phil Coulson's life model decoy is attacked on the Helicarrier, the World Security Council seizes the opportunity to send him deep undercover in Russia. / Meanwhile, back in New York, Clint Barton struggles to come to terms with the loss of his handler and unexpectedly finding himself part of the Avengers, a group of people who can't quite call themselves a team. Yet." Incredibly well done - smart and insightful. )

torakowalski (torakowalski on LJ): "Something Quiet and Minor and Peaceful and Slow " (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "On a normal nights, it takes Phil three minutes, seventeen seconds to go from dressed to bed but tonight he’s working much slower than that, an unusual hesitance between movements." A quiet - but very much them - established relationship night together.)

torakowalski (torakowalski on LJ): "Tell You Secrets Nobody Knows " (Phil/Clint/Natasha. "This is how Phil always hoped this would work; this is them, this is teamwork. They know how to do this." Exactly how I imagine a threesome might come into being with this group. Touching and extremely hot.)

torakowalski: "Won't You Please (Leave Your Mark On Me) " (Avengers. Phil/Clint, Natasha. "" I have a strange relationship with stories like this because much as I tell myself I'm not particularly into kink, some stuff - especially some "Kink-driven Person Recently Involved With Someone Who Doesn't Know How Important Kink Is To Their Newish Lover"stories - are complete id!fic for me. And when they're written as well as this story...well! Potentially spoilery content information: submissive!Clint, plus handcuffing, bondage tape, spanking, wax play.)

triffidsandcuckoos (triffidsandcuckoos on tumblr): "Compromised" (Avengers. Clint/Phil/Natasha, in various combinations. "The thing about being a former assassin – or rather a formerly unofficial assassin – is that ‘compromised’ isn’t something you say lightly." A smart look at all three characters - their weaknesses and their respective needs for control and their mutual [co-]dependences on each other. The writing, though good, isn't always entirely even, but the story has a very smart perspective on what these three might need from - and can offer to - each other.)

tristesses (tristesses on LJ): "More Than Bliss" (Natasha/Loki. "The first time she sees Loki again, Natasha nearly puts a bullet in his skull. The second time, he threatens to kill her. By the third time, she has him on his knees and begging for her touch, and what's more, he likes it." Dark and kinky and...romantic? For some Loki-versions of romantic, at least. Potentially spoilery content information: Dom/sub, masochism, whipping, suicidal ideation...basically, look at the author's warnings.)

twentysomething (twentysomething on DW): "Honey, I Can See the Stars" (Avengers/Thor/Captain America/Iron Man. Steve/Tony. "The most he'd ever cared about anything remotely related was his uniform, which, beyond the stylistic, was pretty necessary. But now his suit comes from a lab far more advanced than the basement of a Brooklyn antique shop, and the only decision he really gets to make is if his pants are too tight. (They were, but he doesn't really think they changed them. He doesn't know why, but he thinks that might have been on purpose.) That being said, he doesn't know what he's done to deserve the double take Tony gives him as he walks in the room."" Tony woos Steve in a very Tony way, and Steve likes Tony, but 'not like that' - or maybe just like that. Bantery and charming.)

uofmdragon: "Sometimes on Fourth Down, You Just Have to Go For It" (Avengers. Phil/Clint. "Sports have always been a part of Clint's life from those rare peaceful moments with his father to watching a game with his new friend, Phil and football has always been a favorite of his." A college football story...but not an AU. A very original take on the trajectory of Clint's relationship - working and otherwise - with Phil)

vain_glorious (on LJ): ”Another Bizarre and Thankless Situation” (Gen. Tony, Loki, Natasha, Team. “"Hostages 101: If you kill them first, no one is going to do what you say."” In which Tony’s a clever hostage and Loki doesn’t quite get nuances. Good, good teamwork.)

vain_glorious (vain_glorious on LJ): " In Great Transition" (Avengers. Tony, The Team. " One by one, the Avengers move into Stark Tower." Great dialogue and lovely team building, for certain Avengers values of 'lovely.' *g*)

vain_glorious (vain_glorious on LJ/DW): "Without the Usual Cost of Labor" (Avengers. Team, generally. ""Someone just reported to SHIELD that whatever was stolen produced “viable offspring,” and we’re hoping that doesn’t mean what we think it does,” Bruce says, evidently deciding to take over for Tony after only one masturbation joke." A serious subject, but a clever - and sometimes funny - treatment of it...and it works. Potentially spoilery content information: Stever's (stolen) sperm and Natasha's egg, resulting in a baby. No sex, but certainly no consent, technically.)

valtyr (valtyr on LJ/DW): "Team Building Activities" (Avengers. Steve/Tony eventually - but mostly TEAM. "Fury's a beautiful princess. Clint's plotting a Communist revolution. Rhodey's not sexy. Wall-E's not a documentary. Clint's not gay but he does give a great blowjob. This fic is not an AU. " Written before the movie, so yeah, AU for the way almost everybody meets, and please note that Tony still loves Pepper, even while he's falling for Steve. Some serious moments [sexual orientation crises and, you know, superhero stuff], but a lot of laugh-out-loud funny moments as well.)

Vera_dragonmuse (dragonmuse on tumblr): the "Alliterative Domiciles" series (Avengers, etc. Tony/Pepper/Bruce, Natasha/Clint...mostly, Steve, more. The author tags most of the stories in this series as 'fluff,' but...they really aren't. There's a great deal of domesticity and concern and friendship and love, but there's also sorrow and fear and angst, you know, just like real life - or what passes for 'real life' in a superhero universe. A really fantastic series, with everybody wonderfully portrayed. Potentially spoilery content information: Bucky! Which also means the Winter Soldier, brainwashing, attempted murder. But...Bucky! )

victoria_p (musesfool on LJ): "Six Meetings Before Lunch" (Avengers/Captain America/Thor. Steve, Thor, others. "Six times Steve and Thor hang out." As it says on the label. Simple and charming, with a Steve and a Thor who are real people.)

vidocqsociety (vidocqsociety on tumblr): "A Night to Remember" (Avengers. Team Gen. "The Avengers throw a birthday party for one of their own." When you just want to laugh! *g*)

vidocqsociety (vidocqsociety on tumblr): "Party Down" (Avengers. Team, with some Steve/Tony.. "Steve never went to his prom. Tony will take any excuse to throw a party. Especially if that excuse is Steve." Funny and sweet, with good voices for one and all)

vidocqsociety (vidocqsociety on tumblr): "The Scientific Method " (Avengers. Team shenanigans. "Bruce and Tony have had better ideas... but they've had worse ones, too." So basically, the Science Bros see what it takes to get Steve Rogers drunk...with his consent, of course. Just, you know... funny, unless you don't like alcohol-based scenarios, in which case, this should be treated as your warning.)

waldorph (waldorph on LJ/DW/tumblr): "fubar" (Avengers. Natasha, Clint, Team. "After New York, Natasha takes Clint to Russia to either put him together or watch him fall apart." A wonderful story, post-movie [and all the accompanying grief] with a particularly strong Natasha voice and a great friendship between Natasha and Clint.)

wanttobeatree (wanttobeatree on LJ): "A Very, Very, Very Fine House" (Avengers. Steve/Tony, Pepper/Tony, Various Avengers and Others. "The Avengers take initiative. Or, the story of how a group of remarkable people came together to drink cocktails, eat ice-cream and wait for Fury's call." Really engaging and good insight into the way that people learn about each other when they're not busy trying to save the world. Near-perfect characterizations too; Tony, in particular, is a great blend of brash egotism and closed-off insecurity. Despite the listed pairings, this is more gen than anything else, although it’s clearly going to be Steve/Tony in the recently announced sequel)

webandwhiskers (webandwhiskers on tumblr): the "Proper Care and Feeding of Indefinable Things" series (Avengers/Hulk. Natasha-centric, including Natasha/Bruce, Team, Thor cast. An open-ended - i.e., incomplete - series, which nevertheless feels complete. In part a Natasha character study and in part a Natasha/Bruce romance [especially in the longest story of the series so far: "Neither Wild nor Tame" which focuses entirely on the development of their relationship]. Engaging and insightful, with some smart things to say about the fine line between the human and the monstrous. Good look at friendship too, especially female friendship. Update More pairings and more relationships are getting added as the series goes on, and the stories keep feeling right. Check the tags for pairings/threesomes, but if you're like me, all the combinations will work for you.)

websandwhiskers: "Star-crossed" (Avengers. Jane/Thor. "A vignette taking place during "Avengers", after shawarma, before Thor returns to Asgard with Loki. Thor and Jane have their reunion, and discuss their future." The conversation I'd like to have seen between Jane and Thor after the Avengers.)

weepingnaiad: "Soft Trees Break the Fall" (Avengers. Clint, Natasha, Phil, background Clint/Phil & Natasha/Bucky. "After what Clint did while under Loki’s control – and he remembers every detail, every decision, every twitch of muscle – Clint burns with self-loathing. He never counted on Natasha’s unwavering, unconditional support, nor did he imagine that he’d ever have someone who cared enough to fight Clint himself for his forgiveness." Post-movie 'fixit' with a good sense of the psychological fall-out from Loki's actions, especially on Clint. Stronger in the earlier chapters, but still...engaging throughout. Potentially spoilery content information: Pretty much the whole menu: killings, PTSD, drug/alcohol addiction, physical violence, mention of non-con, flashbacks, thoughts of suicide...and unhappiness. It doesn't end unhappily, however.)

Westgate (Harkpad): "Miles to Go" (Avengers. Clint & Bruce, with past Clint/Phil. "After the Chitauri Incident and after Clint is cleared by SHIELD, he finds himself working two jobs - one as a SHIELD agent and one as an Avenger. It's tiring, but he doesn't stand up for himself. He figures he owes everyone a lot. Bruce is out of practice in having friends, but he's pretty sure that standing up for them is what friends do. Bruce rallies the team as well (and cooks)." Really lovely story about friendship.)

Westgate (Harkpad) (harkpad02 on LJ): "Recurve" (Avengers. Clint/Phil, with significant Natasha interaction, Barney Barton, others. "When the FBI comes to Clint for help finding Barney Barton, who has been an FBI agent for 10 years and has mysteriously disappeared, the past Clint has tried to escape invades his life. Phil & Natasha are there to help him through in their own ways, but when Barney's disappearance turns into something much bigger, Phil is sure Clint won't emerge unscathed." Set pre-Avengers, but the Phil/Clint relationship is an established one. Good plot and a good examination of Clint's psychological state as his past rears its ugly head. A bit of an abrupt end from my perspective, but the story still works well.)

Westgate (Harkpad): "Well on Their Way" (Avengers. Bruce & Clint. "Bruce and Clint hang out at a pub and trade coolest and dumbest things. Including a spicy food story." Just two guys getting to know each other better. I'd happily read dozens of stories where various combinations of Avengers just hung out together and talked - especially if they all felt this right.)

what_alchemy (what_alchemy on LJ/DW): "Móðir" (Frigga, Odin, Baby!Loki, Kid!Thor. "When Odin places his Jötunn foundling in Frigga's arms, she knows what is to come." Gen. Painful and honest.)

withpractice_ff (withpractice_ff on LJ): "All That You've Been Waiting For" (Avengers/Hulk/IronMan. Tony/Bruce. "The Hulk is a cock-block. Tony has a solution." Basically 'just sex,' but it doesn't feel like a pwp. also, there's a collar. And Tony is, of course, a genius. *g*)

Wynn (jwynn on LJ): ”The Super-Powered and Socially Useless Club” (Avengers. Steve, Team. “You are cordially invited to the Super-Powered and Socially Useless Club. Because such issues as ours must come with some benefit. In this case, alcohol. But your own, not mine. Even if I am a billionaire. Meetings the first of every month. You know where. Be there or be emotionally well-adjusted like Rogers.” Sweet, funny, touching, and even a little true.)

yugimutos (aka weatheredlaw; yugimutos on tumblr): "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (Avengers/Iron Man. Tony/Pepper/Bruce. “Tony knows this asteroid like he knows himself, which would be comforting if he could make peace with all of that." It’s the end of the world or it will be if Tony isn’t able to do something about that asteroid. Smart and lovely and perfectly voiced. Potentially spoilery content information: The apocalypse never actually happens, if you were worried.)

yugimutos (aka weatheredlaw; yugimutos on tumblr): "may your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground" (Avengers/Iron Man/Hulk. Bruce/Tony, Steve. "Because there is something of Bruce in Tony that sparks when they touch and it lit a fire under their feet when they met on that bridge and it's been burning ever since." Very smart and very believable. Because...they say, don't they, that one of the key marks of intelligence is knowing what you don't know - and this Tony and this Bruce are absolutely intelligent enough to recognize exactly where their limits lie.)

yugimutos/weatheredlaw (yugimutos on tumblr): "you taste like birthday, you look like new year" (Avengers/iron Man/Hulk. Bruce/Tony/Pepper. " And they each know, in this moment, what it means to be loved unconditionally." Gentle and loving and all three of them are really trying to make this work, especially Tony. Very sweet.)

Zee (ficbyzee on LJ): "Our Deal" (Avengers. Clint/Natasha. "Ever since we saved the world, it's felt different between us." Excellent voices, i.e., ones that actually match the characters as opposed to sounding like variations on random middle class university students, This is post-movie, and so for these two particular characters, there is grief wrapped up with the longing - and Tony to provide some exasperating but welcome tension relief. Very smart.)

Zekkass (zekkass on LJ/DW): "and you're out" (Avengers/Captain America/Iron Man. Steve/Tony. "A villain kidnaps Tony and removes his arc reactor and Steve's the one to rescue him. Tony proceeds to try and deal with this. Steve tries not to think about the gaping hole he saw in Tony's chest." A very powerful look at Tony's psychological make-up...and Steve's too, for that matter.)

Zekkass "i'll reject your reality and go home to my own (but not without fixing a few things first) " (Avengers Bruce/Tony, Steve. "He doesn't expect to come back from that one-way trip. He doesn't expect to wake up in the past. / (Steve doesn't expect a robot to show up in his home, but he's always rolled with the punches.)" Parallel universes, handled extremely well. Happy and Sad at the same time.)

Zinnith: "Still Standing" (Avengers. Clint/Natasha...although mostly Clint & Natasha. " “I want superpowers,” Clint groans and swats at her hand when she reaches for another piece of glass. “Invulnerability, a healing factor, anything. I bet Thor never feels like this." Post Avengers battle and...perfectly them.)

Zinnith (zinnith on LJ): "Sum of 180 Degrees" (Avengers. Phil, Clint, Natasha. "Agent Coulson is not dead, director Fury has a black eye, Black Widow wants cotton candy, and Hawkeye is thinking about running away to join the circus again. All is not well with the world, but at least it's still spinning." Gen, in the wake of the Avengers movie...and Clint is having a hard time processing things. Lovely, albeit difficult...but so very hopeful.)
