Recs: June 1, 2011
I am the slowest reccer in the universe! Okay, so I need to make a vow that from now on I'll (a) not forget to rec the things I want to rec, which...lord knows I've done dozens of times in this past half year, and (b) make a recs post every single month. Can I keep to that vow? Let's see!
[Recs from HP Beholder will be in the next update]
Harry Potter
Aurette "Practical Solutions" (Snape/Hermione. "Hermione doesn't have time for a relationship. Snape doesn't have the patience. It's a good thing they are not having one" The author calls this a "romp," and indeed it is! Sexy, funny, light without being fluffy, and even occasionally in character [that was said tongue in cheek because I <3 this story] Good fun.)
chudleycannonsnumber1 "Spinner's End" (Harry, Ron, Hermione. "He had nothing in the end" Gen. The trio visit Spinner's End to pack up their late professor's goods after the events of Deathly Hallows. A quiet - and believable - coda to Snape's life.)
Delphi (atdelphi on LJ/delphi on DW): "Croissants and Coffee" (Kingsley Shacklebolt/Blaise Zabini. "After the Battle of Hogwarts, all Slytherin upperclassmen are taken into custody; Blaise Zabini plans to charm his way out." Smart and surprising, with an excellent Blaise voice.)
Kelly Chambliss (kellychambliss on LJ): "'Now That I'm Older' by Adela" (Severus/Minerva. " Adela Edwards has turned 13, and now that she's so much older, she sees the world and Stephen and Miranda a little differently from the way she did last summer. AU (Severus lives)" A charming sequel to Kelly's wonderful "'My Journal About My Life and Stephen and Miranda' by Adela".)
Loten (loten on LJ, but that journal is mostly unused): "Post Tenebras, Lux (After Darkness, Light)" (Snape/Hermione. "A chance meeting ten years after the war may not be just a coincidence, and may prove to have very far-reaching consequences. A story of many things, but primarily of healing." Smart and engaging, with a believably perceptive Hermione, and a wonderfully [unattractive] Snape who eventually softens a bit, but who's never soft.)
necromanticnoir (necromanticnoir on LJ/DW/IJ): "I Was Adrift" (Snape/Harry. "After the war, Harry finds Snape is alive - and in Azkaban. Unfortunately, the only people allowed to visit inmates are immediate relations - or their spouses." A surprising good mystery with surprisingly good dirty sex and surprisingly touching.)
richardgloucester (dickgloucester on LJ): "A Fresh Start" (Snape/Hermione. "After the War, it's time for people to looks at their lives anew, and start again, if they're willing. Hermione thinks Snape could do with a helping hand." There's a longstanding tradition in fandom of stories of this type, where Character A helps Character B make himself over in order to attract somebody's attention, when all along A and B are really meant for each other; "A Fresh Start" is a very good example of that type of tale. Very sweet - without being a bit cloying- and very emotionally satisfying.)
sarkysue (sarkysue on LJ): "The Dumbledore Stratagem" (Snape/Harry. "A story in which Draco is pretty much a sociopath, Snape is verging on the Heathcliffian and Harry is, well, Harry. Stuck in a hideaway with his two least favourite Slytherins, Harry starts competing for something he didn’t even realise that he wanted." An alternative to DH, and one which I - as a Snarry fan - much prefer.)
Shiv (shiv5468): "Cupid Stunt" (Snape/Harry. "Is it really wise to put a bow and arrow in the hands of a man with a grudge and no hesitation about shooting people in the back? " Snape - for reasons which shall become clear - becomes Cupid. Poor Snape? Lucky us. Very funny indeed.)
King's Speech (The)
cruisedirector (cruisedirector on LJ): "Connection" (Lionel, Bertie, Elizabeth, Myrtle. "The telephone taunts Bertie." Very, very real.)
Shakespeare
Shayheyred (shayheyred on LJ/DW): "The Pirate and the Puritan" (Twelfth Night. Antonio/Malvolio. "Two losers in love get a second chance at happiness" Prose, yet no less perfectly voiced for that - plus funny and touching.)
Sherlock Holmes
Basingstoke (basingstoke on LJ/DW): the "Yes Yes Yes" series, with two parts so far: the very short "Touchy, Feely" ("What Sherlock will and won't work on.") and the not-at-all-short "Indecorous" ("In which John learns to balance a kinky girlfriend, an asexual boyfriend, a ten-inch cock, his sister, the neighbours, his friends, and his blog. Some are more balanced than others."). (Sherlock BBC. Threesome: Sherlock/John/Mary - although not the Mary you might be expecting. *g* Very engaging!)
Onedergirl29 (fic journal - multiplegrooves on LJ): "Getting Better" (Sherlock BBC - AU. Gen, with Sherlock/Holmes undercurrents. "Tristram Holmes dreads attending his new primary school, fearing he'll be teased and bullied as usual. Only, nothing goes exactly as he thinks it will when he finds himself with a seemingly unlikely friend in Emily Watson. " A very believable Kid!Fic, where Sherlock and John's young children meet and become friends before the men do. And there's a mystery to be solved as well...at least one. Occasional repetitions of descriptions, but generally, very well written and engaging.)
thisprettywren (also thisprettywren on LJ): "A Matter of Perspective" (Sherlock BBC. Sherlock/John, but more gennish. "Sherlock is sectioned, but it appears the hospital staff may not have his best interests at heart." Is what's happening to Sherlock real or a series of hallucinations? Either way...it can be a harrowing journey - and scarily believable. Very well done.)
True Blood
Speranza (cesperanza on LJ/DW): "You Get Your Life Back" (Eric/Sookie. "Some days it's hard to feel good about the vampire rights movement, but one thing's for sure: the vampires sure saved radio." A very good feel for the wary attraction between the t.v. versions of Sookie and Eric - and particularly good Tara and Bill voices!)
VORKOSIGAN BOOKS (BUJOLD)
E.E. Beck (eolianbeck lightgetsin on LJ): "Trust Games" ("Cordelia's son comes home from his year on Beta Colony, and Sergeant Bothari has something to tell her." I love Bothari - as a character - and I love him most when he's seen from Cordelia's pov, particularly when it's done as well as it is here.)
WHITE COLLAR
China Shop (china_shop on LJ/DW): "No, and here's a dozen reasons why" (Peter/Neal/Elizabeth. "It's not always easy for Peter to know what's the right thing to do; sometimes it's damn near impossible." Starting pre-canon - as plans are made at the FBI surrounding the imminent arrival of their new 'consultant' - and moving through all of seasons 1 and 2, this is a wonderful story about the difficulties inherent in Peter and El trusting and ultimately loving somebody with Neal's 'interesting' background.)
